Hijab controversy in Nigerian law school
On 12 December, I was watching news and to my greatest surprise a Nigerian law graduate
was denied her call to bar by the body of Benchers at the ceremony. She refused to remove her hijab, insisting on wearing the wig over the veil, which violate the dress code the body set
I asked myself why does she insisted on wearing the wig over the veil. A society that passes contrary opinion or discourages civil debate is for all firmly fixed not a free society. In many of these societies the involuntary rejection reveals itself as a piece of enjoining legislation, while in some other countries like Nigeria it is the attitude of the citizen that makes it impossible to have a decent conversation on distressed issues
The debate over the refusal of a law graduate to obey the dress code of her profession and the subsequent refusal to call her to the Nigerian bar has generated different opinion from different quarters in the country.
