Teleoperating robots with virtual reality:

getting inside a robot’s head

....................................................................................................................................................................

Back in the day (mid eighties), before I became a Trucker, I worked in a YUGE Distribution center. One of my jobs was unloading trucks.

I was a SF reader and even then I knew about tele-operation. I dearly wished for a tele-operated robot that I could control to work in the sweltering heat inside those trailers.

Tele-operated forklifts and palletjacks wold work just fine too.

In FACT...there would be NO reason to have any people inside that warehouse...except for the truckers who were waiting for their trailers to be unloaded.

OH WAIT...Robot Trucks is the coming thing isn't it?

  • Researchers at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) have developed a virtual-reality (VR) system that lets you teleoperate a robot using an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive VR headset.
    .
CSAIL’s “Homunculus Model” system (the classic notion of a small human sitting inside the brain and controlling the actions of the body) embeds you in a VR control room with multiple sensor displays, making it feel like you’re inside the robot’s head. By using gestures, you can control the robot’s matching movements to perform various tasks.
    .
The system can be connected either via a wired local network or via a wireless network connection over the Internet. (The team demonstrated that the system could pilot a robot from hundreds of miles away, testing it on a hotel’s wireless network in Washington, DC to control Baxter at MIT.)

I wish I lost my job to robots.

thanks for sharing keep it up duddy.

Great post @everittdmickey Robots are really working like machines human. Robots have made the human's life easier in real sense.
Well what kind of robots are there? Are they bad or good for web?

As a military veteran, you have been added to the @chairborne aka the Veterans Project following list. Our goal is to support military veterans and serving members on Steemit. You can learn more about the project here.

This is not an automated message and we are sharing it with you for your awareness. Please let @guiltyparties know if you wish to be removed from the list or if we added you in error. You can find us on Steemit.chat.

very different one indeed!!!!

Robot pallet lifts are a good idea that will never fly. It will never fly because then the bosses would have nowhere to go and look at sweaty bodies.

Cool video. That Bezo, and Musk, guys with the dreams and brains to make shit happen.

I need one of those to lift me up when my spirit's down.

Long ago I read of a Navajo that was confined to a bed for decades. He was asked if he got bored.

He replied that there was more beauty in one grain of sand than he could ever appreciate, and he was having trouble keeping up.

I hope you can find the beauty that surrounds you every moment, regardless of where you are. The mystery of why that spot is on the wall, or a scratch on a bedpost, can occupy your mind with what is, and enable you to be free of fear of what may come, or regret over what has passed.

Freedom is in your mind, where it belongs, as is joy, and peace.

I hope you have them all.

to put it another way.
an intelligent person never gets bored.

Man, that's a lot of Roombas. I bet that floor is spotless!

I just want a Roomba to bring me beer. Mebbe a drone to flit to the market to get it, and airlift it to me.

Was it the movie Wall-E that showed people unable to even walk after decades of being confined to motorized ez chairs, slurping big gulps on a space cruise ship? Yeah, that's what I wanna be!

Not.

I'll be eating grubs and leaves inna woods, where I belong, when the Millennial's grandkids are boneless slugs in Matrix style pods. Until they catch me, or kill me.

We will see the future to be all automated with robots and a lo of unemployed folks who should have gotten the job that those robots would perform

There will be a difficult transition, I expect. The fictional accounting that is used to create a few thousand oligarchs is being replaced with another kind of economy. The huge factories that stamp out goods are being replaced with desktop 3D printing, where consumers make the goods they need, and no capital is necessary. Liquid Democracy proffers a mechanism that makes corruptible representatives and politicians obsolete.

In every facet of technology, from sex to communications, individuals are growing in power faster than institutions, and the end result of this, if projected to completion, is humanity set free from disease, death, war, and slavery; free to explore and create across the universe.

I may never live to see that world I crave so fiercely, but I rejoice that people will.

In the meantime, we can but find the good that exists within us, and project it to those we are fortunate enough to enjoy the company of.

I have a theory that I have kept secret for months on Steemit now, that Giant Space Robots of Love from the Future will, when they become like gods, yearn for our good company, and figger out ways to bring us back from death, just so they can hang out with us.

We'll see.

It's kinda odd that the Silicon Valley billionaires are making jobs obsolete, and proposing UBI.

Whaddya think about UBI? Is it just bread and circuses, or a means of transitioning to a society that no longer includes jobs, markets, wealth, and housework?

I see UBI as a stop gap measure to lessen the difficulties during transistion
When everyone has a solar powered, full spectrum, desk top manufactory (cornicopia machine)that can extract feedstock from the air, polluted water or dirt...

that will change everything.

/me tapping my toes impatiently.. "Where's my flying car?"
