DIABETES... The Silent Killer

in #diabetes7 years ago

As a follow up to my previous post SILENT KILLER DISEASES… Remedies and Treatments, I have proceeded to write on the #2 Silent killer disease being DIABETES hoping it someday saves a life or two.

The so-called diabetes ‘mellitus’ is a common western country sickness and it is a disorder of the metabolism of glucose. In reality, this term includes two diseases whose common characteristics is an elevated level of sugar in the blood:

(1): THE JUVENILE DIABETES aka insulin-dependent diabetes: Due to a viral infection, a toxin, or an autoimmune reaction, all reinforced by a genetic predisposition, the insulin-producing cells on the pancreas (a glandular organ in the digestive system and endocrine system of vertebrates. i.e. glands that secrete their products, hormones, directly into the blood rather than through a duct) are destroyed. These diabetics tend to be thin and must receive insulin from infancy.

(2): ADULT ONSET DIABETES aka non-insulin dependent diabetes: This type of diabetes has an unknown cause. It is a chronic condition that affects the way your body metabolizes sugar (glucose), your body's important source of fuel.
With this type of diabetes, your body either resists the effects of insulin — a hormone that regulates the movement of sugar into your cells — or doesn't produce enough insulin to maintain a normal glucose level.

DIET

Foods that are recommended and advised against: Those foods recommended in this table contribute significantly to the control of diabetes and the avoidance of its complications. They should therefore be included in any dietetic plan established by a specialist. Those foods whose use should be reduced or eliminated have been shown to initiate or exacerbate diabetes. The diabetic that bear these simple recommendations in mind will have accomplished a great deal towards control of the disease.

TO REDUCE THE RISK OF HYPERTENSION, ONE MUST

REDUCE OR ELIMINATE THE INTAKE OF:

  • Several studies have shown that infants fed with cow’s milk show a greater tendency to type 1 diabetes (insulin-dependent).

INCREASE THE INTAKE OF:
Legumes, Vegetables, Whole Grains, Fruits, Nuts, Artichoke, Celery, Avocado, Onion, Mushroom, Nopal, Wheat Germ, etc.

NOTE:

Whole grains and legumes fulfill the four dietary objectives for diabetics since they contribute to the control of glucose better than any other type of food, Additionally, their liberal use prevents diabetes.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON DIABETIC DIETS

CLASSIC DIET FOR DIABETICSTODAY'S DIABETIC DIET
Until recently, diabetics were prescribed a diet:Diabetic treatment of diabetics is constantly overcoming the old taboos concerning the drawback of carbohydrates. Today's dietary recommendation is:
Low in all types of carbohydrates, Rich in proteins and fats.Rich in complex carbohydrates (starch), Rich in fiber, Low in fat, particularly saturated animal fat, Low in sugar_.

CLASSIC DIET FOR DIABETICS: This carbohydrate-poor diet seemed the most logical for diabetics, and apparently allowed good blood-glucose level control. Nevertheless, it has been shown that in the long run, diabetics eating this type of diet have a higher incidence of arteriosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, including heart attack. This is caused by the excess fat and protein combined with the lack of grains, legumes, and antioxidant fruits.

TODAY'S DIABETIC DIET: This provides better results in controlling glycemia, preventing complications, and improving longevity of diabetics.

Waw it's very helpful info, thankyou 👍

you are welcome. look forward to updates on other silent killers

My husband got diabetes at the age of 8, still doing well 58 years later :) Looks better than many others his age, despite the hectic regime of pricking his finger 4-5 times a day to test his sugar levels, 5 injections per day (before each meal, at bedtime a long and quick acting insulin, quite hectic!) We generally follow a healthy way of eating. Not an easy disease to live with and does cause other health complications as you mentioned! Thank you for highlighting diabetes.

I got type one when I was 27. I'm right there with your hubby.

This is very medically educative. Thanks for sharing man. Steem on

When you write that high meat consumtion is assosiated with higher risk of getting diabetes, people might think that meat consumption leads to diabetes. I don't know if that was your intension, but anyways, it could not be further from the truth when you boil it down to whats causing the connection.

The best treatment for diabetes is diet and a lot of exercise daily. One of the best exercises is walking 30 minutes daily
