Ist man in Myanmar unterwegs, so kommt man auch um Mandalay und seine angrenzenden Bezirke nicht herum. Mandalay war die letzte Hauptstadt des birmanischen Königreichs, bevor sie nach Rangun verlegt wurde.
Ich kann euch nicht genau sagen, ob mir Mandalay nun gefällt oder nicht. Es ist eine asiatische 1,5 Mio. Einwohner-Stadt mit viel Verkehr, mit schönen, aber auch schmuddeligen Ecken. Eine Stadt halt.
Allerdings ist man überwältigt von der Anzahl an Klöstern, Stupas, Pagoden. Teilweise ähnlich aufgebaut und doch so unterschiedlich.

Am Fuße des Mandalay-Hill liegt das "größte Buch der Welt". Dabei handelt es sich nicht, wie man auf den ersten Blick vermuten könnte, um ein überdimensional großes Buch aus Stein, Holz oder einem sonstigen Werkstoff, sondern vielmehr um eine Pagode.

Die Kuthodaw-Pagode, 1868 fertig gestellt, besteht aus über 700 kleinen Stupas. In jeder dieser Stupa befindet sich eine Marmorplatte auf der die Lehren Buddhas niedergeschrieben wurden.

Besonders in den Abendstunden ein wunderschöner, spiritueller Ort zum Verweilen. Zu dieser Zeit sind nur noch wenige Besucher in der Pagode und das Licht erzeugt eine einzigartige Stimmung.

Nach Sonnenuntergang beginnt das Nachtleben auf den Märkten und den Streetfoodständen. Super leckeres Myanmar-Style Essen bekommt man im Shan Ma Ma Ecke 30th St./81st St.

When travelling in Myanmar, you sure do not want to miss a trip to Mandalay and its adjoining districts.
Mandalay was the last capital of the Burmese Kingdom before being transferred to Rangoon.

I cannot tell you exactly if I like Mandalay or not. It is a typical, busy Asian City with 1.5 Million inhabitants, with a mixture of beautiful and grubby places.
However, I was very impressed by the number of monasteries, stupas and pagodas. Same in architecture but so unique. Same same but different :-)

At the foot of Mandalay Hill lies the "the world´s largest Book". It is not, as you would expect at first glance, an oversized book of stone, wood or other material, but rather a pagoda.
The Kuthodaw Pagoda, completed in 1868, consists of over 700 small stupas. In each of these stupas there is a marble slab on which the teachings of Buddha are carved in.
Especially in the evening this is a beautiful, spiritual place to stay. At this time of the day there are only a few visitors in the pagoda and the light creates a unique atmosphere.
After sunset the nightlife begins at the markets and street food stalls. Super delicious Myanmar style food is served at Shan Ma Ma.
