Der sehr seltene Frauenschuh ist die bekannteste und spektakulärste unter den einheimischen Orchideen. Sie benötigt lichtdurchflutete Wälder mit kalkigen Böden, um zu gedeihen. In Deutschland findet man die größten Vorkommen im Raum der Mittelgebirge. Mit einer Wuchshöhe von bis zu 60 Zentimeter erreicht der Europäische Frauenschuh eine stattliche Größe. Bis es so weit kommt, hat diese Orchidee aber einen langen Entwicklungszyklus hinter sich gebracht. Die ersten vier Jahre lebt sie unter der Erde in enger Symbiose mit einem Pilz, bis sie das erste grüne Blatt austreibt. Jetzt betreibt die Pflanze Photosynthese und bis zu ihrer ersten Blüte können zwölf weitere Jahre vergehen. Ein unglaublich langer und komplexer Entwicklungsprozess machen diese Orchidee so besonders.

The very rare lady's slipper is the most famous and spectacular of the native orchids. It needs light-flooded forests with calcareous soils to thrive. In Germany one finds the largest occurrences in the area of the low mountain ranges. With a growth height of up to 60 centimeters, the European Lady's Slipper reaches a stately size. By the time it reaches this point, however, this orchid has undergone a long development cycle. For the first four years it lives underground in close symbiosis with a fungus until the first green leaf sprouts. Now the plant is photosynthesizing and another twelve years can pass before it flowers. An incredibly long and complex development process makes this orchid so special.

Die pantoffelförmige Blüte verströmt im Inneren der Blüte einen verlockenden Duft nach Aprikose. Die leuchtend gelbe Farbe der Blüte und der anziehende Duft locken Sandbienen an. Durch die so genannte Kesselfalle rutscht das Insekt in das Innere der Blüte. Eine dünne ölige Beschichtung lässt die Biene ins Innere der Blüte gleiten, um an ihr Pollenmasse anzuheften. Durchsichtige Fenster an den Außenwänden, zeigen der Biene den Weg aus der Blüte. Dabei heftet sich Pollenmasse an ihren Rücken. Besucht das Insekt eine weitere Blüte, bleiben Pollen an der Nabe der Blüte kleben und die Blüte ist bestäubt.

The slippery blossom exudes an enticing apricot scent inside the blossom. The bright yellow colour of the flower and the attractive scent attract mining bees. The insect slides through the so-called boiler trap into the inner part of the flower. A thin oily coating allows the bee to slide inside the flower to attach to its pollen mass. Transparent windows on the outer walls show the bee the way out of the flower. Pollen mass attaches itself to the bee's back. If the insect visits another flower, pollen sticks to the hub of the flower and the flower is pollinated.
