Kaisermantel ■ Silver-washed fritillary

Argynnis paphia (Linnaeus, 1758)

Der Kaisermantel ist ein sehr großer auffälliger Tagfalter aus der Familie der Edelfalter und ein typischer Waldschmetterling. Er ist in ganz Deutschland noch vertreten und man kann ihn bevorzugt an Waldrändern und lichten Waldwegen mir reichlichem Blütenvorkommen an Wasserdost (Eupatorium perfoliatum) und Skabiosen finden. Er fliegt von Juni bis in den August in einer Generation. Die Raupe ernährt sich von Mädesüß und Veilchenarten.

    Great find and photos!

    In The Netherlands this one is on the Red List as "disappeared", but recently, a few have been seen and they seem to be procreating as well.

    It can be so different from region to region. With us in Lower Franconia he was to be found quite often in the past year. I could also observe the form Argynnis paphia f. valesina in several areas.

    Anyway, I wish you luck to find him this year.
