Deranged Photography Contest - Birds or flying animals Theme - Bald Eagle
This young bald eagle is flying away with a crab.
I saw this immature bald eagle at the bird sanctuary in Victoria, BC. It had just dived down to the beach and came away with a crab clutched in its talons.
Judging by the white spots beneath the wings, I estimate this to be a two-year-old bird.
Nikon D750, 600mm, 1/1000 second, f/6.3, ISO 140

Haha yes, the same crab! He can't put it down now! Yes, I believe the contest changes... I'm not sure how often it runs, I've just discovered it.

How do the spots help determine age please?
Thank you! When they are very young, the head and tail are not white and there are many white spots on the body. In the attached photo you can see a bald eagle that is roughly six months to a year old.
The adult bald eagle has a white head and tail, and the feathers on the wings and body all become dark.
