Na dann kommt doch mit mir hoch zur Burg Vianden.

Wir haben dem schönen Erbe der Vergangenheit im Nordosten unseres kleinen Großherzogtums, vergangenen Sonntag einen Besuch abgestattet. Ich kann Euch nur sagen, die Reise hat sich gelohnt.

Die Burg Vianden, welche bis vor kurzem noch eine Ruine war, wurde ab 1977 von Grund auf restauriert und zeigt sich heute wieder in ihrem alten Glanz. Wahrscheinlich würden sich die alten Rittersleute wieder wohl hier fühlen.

Interessant für Film-Enthusiasten: Im Jahr 2000 war die Burg Drehort für den Film "Shadow of the Vampire".

Why don't you come up to Vianden Castle with me?

We visited the beautiful heritage of the past in the north-east of our little Grand Duchy last Sunday. All I can tell you is that the journey was worth it.

Vianden Castle, which until recently was a ruin, was completely restored in 1977 and is now back in its former glory. The old knights would probably feel comfortable here again.

Interesting for movie enthusiasts: In 2000 the castle was the shooting location for the film "Shadow of the Vampire".

Die ersten Spuren des Baus der Burg Vianden stammen aus den Jahren 350 bis 400 nach Christus. Ihr Bau begann in römischer Zeit und wurde in karolingischer Zeit fortgesetzt. Die meisten Gebäude wurden zwischen dem XI und XIV. Jahrhundert errichtet.

Das Schloss hat viele Veränderungen erfahren, es gibt neun verschiedene architektonische Epochen, vom fünften Jahrhundert bis heute. Seit 1977 ist die Burg Eigentum des luxemburgischen Staates, der sie unter Wahrung der historischen Formen restaurierte. Ausgrabungen haben das Vorhandensein einer Festung unter dem späten Kaiserreich und einer ersten karolingischen mittelalterlichen Einfriedung aus dem IX. Jahrhundert. Der Höhepunkt der Grafen von Vianden geht auf dem XII. bis XIII. Jahrhundert zurück. Aus dieser Zeit, dem Übergang zwischen Romanik und Gotik, stammen auch die meisten Gebäude der Burg.

The first traces of the construction of Vianden Castle date from 350 to 400 AD. Its construction began in Roman times and continued in Carolingian times. Most of the buildings were built between the XI and XIV centuries.

The castle has undergone many changes, there are nine different architectural epochs, from the fifth century to the present day. Since 1977, the castle has been the property of the Luxembourg State, which has restored it while respecting its historical forms. Excavations have shown the presence of a fortress under the late Empire and a first Carolingian medieval enclosure from the IXth century. The climax of the Counts of Vianden dates back to the XIIth to XIIIth centuries. Most of the castle's buildings date from this period, the transition between Romanesque and Gothic.

Man überliess auch nach der Restauration der Bausubstanz nichts dem Zufall und so wurde auch die Inneneinrichtung liebevoll jener Zeit angepasst, als die Burg noch von mittelalterlichem Leben erfüllt war. Geschichtsfreunde kommen hier auf ihre Kosten, denn natürlich findet man Rüstungen, Waffen, Ausgrabungsstücke sowie häusliche Einrichtungen aus jener Zeit.

Even after the restoration of the building substance nothing was left to chance and so the interior was lovingly adapted to the time when the castle was still filled with medieval life. History lovers will get their money's worth here, because of course you will find armour, weapons, excavations as well as home furnishings from that time.

Mit diesem Kettenhemd hat man aber sicherlich auch mal den Gegner zum Lachen gebracht. Unsere Lachmuskeln hat das verlängerte Nasenstück jedenfalls beansprucht.

Wie wir feststellen konnten, genoss man auch im Mittelalter - ein gewisser gesellschaftlicher Status vorausgesetzt - ein komfortables Leben.

Wer weiss, vielleicht hatte auch das Personal bei den Adligen von Vianden ein einigermassen gutes Leben. Diese nachgestellte Kücheneinrichtung jedenfalls hat sicher in jener Zeit keine Wünsche offen gelassen.

Who knows, maybe the staff of the nobles of Vianden also had a reasonably good life. In any case, this kitchen equipment left nothing to be desired at that time.

Mir hat besonders der Weinkeller gefallen, welcher immer noch, oder besser wieder, als solcher genutzt wird. Hier werden auch gelegentlich öffentliche und private Feiern abgehalten. Auch die Nase erkannte schnell, dass es sich hier um den Weinkeller handelt.

I particularly liked the wine cellar, which is still, or better again, used as such. Occasional public and private celebrations are also held here. Even the nose quickly recognized that this was the wine cellar.

Ich kann Euch einen Besuch der Burg auf jeden Fall nur empfehlen. Solltet ihr also mal in die Nähe des charmanten Städtchens Vianden, gelegen an der Our und somit direkt an der deutschen Grenze, sein, nehmt Euch die Zeit für einen Bummel durch die Stadt und steigt anschliessend hoch zur Burg.

I can only recommend a visit to the castle. So if you are near the charming town of Vianden, located on the Our and thus directly on the German border, take the time for a stroll through the city and then climb up to the castle.
