The Cycling Sessions Part 6: Brünig-Hasliberg to Lucerne

in #cyclefeed6 years ago

It has been almost a month since I had a decent ride on my bike around the mountains here, and it was time to let my baby outside again. Initially I was planning to go for a hike today, but considering that high in the hills the temperature is a lot lower, I decided to stay in the lowlands and enjoy these late summer hot days in a proper way!

Knowing me this trip was not very well sorted out ofcourse. After waking up late I was checking the maps with the train tables to see what was all to do within an hour distance of me. I decided to take a train South to Brünig-Hasliberg. From here on I would bike back to Lucerne passing Lungern, Sarnen, Alpnachtstad and Hergiswil. The map showed the fastest route of 46 kilometer, but I took all kinds of detours on the way to have nice backpaths and ended up making around 60 kms in total.

The trainride was already a beauty on itself.

This train is a very famous one because it heads from Lucerne straight into Interlaken. Interlaken has another train up the Jungfrau mountain, one of Europes highest trainstations. Because of this it is always overflooded with tourists who ALL take this same train in that direction. So there were a lot of Chines and Indian folks joining me along my ride, all looking at me strange that I hung my bike in a rack in the train. The views along the way were astonishing but hardly anybody around me seemed to notice, they were all too busy with their phones making selfies ;)

Anyway, when I reached Brünig trainstation I started to descend fast because of the temperature there. I missed the first bikepath ending up on the main road between busses and a lot of motorgangs. But what it gave me was this fantastic view of Lungern.

I had noticed Lungern in the train already while passing it and it was one of the coolest mountainvillages I have seen as yet. In between the mountains with a crystalblue lake surrounded with high peaks. The lake is big enough for small sailboats but not too big that you will have bigger ships on it. I immediately decided to stop at the lake and have a coffee even though I had only just started biking for like 15 minutes or so.

With the sound of waterfalls in the background I totally found some piece of mind. These waterfalls will pop up here and there along the side of the mountain ending up in the lake. Apart from that they are so beautiful, the sound of falling water is for some reason music to my ears.

At the end of the lake I had a wonderfull point where on one side I had a fantastic Panorama over the Lungernsee with in the back the still snowed peaks of the Eiger glacier and on the other side parapenters flying down the mountain. Both you cant really see on the picture, but you will have to believe me on my word on it okay ;)

At the end of the Lungernsee there are two ways down, one is a bikepath of 12% steepness and the other one is the main road for cars.

Naturally I chose the bike path, but damn it was steep! I ran into a lot of bikers heading this same path upwards and I could really see them struggling. I was happy I was doing this in the opposite way.
From here I had a really nice view over the Sarnersee which I decided to pass on the West side and not through the city of Sachseln. Going through the forest the ended up being a cool choice.

I took some rest in Sarnen and from there on went 25 kilometers in sprint homewards. The wind was picking up a bit coming head first on me, so this turned into a sort of a grind session, but felt very rewarding in the end.

All in all I was so surprised on what kind of beauty was behind these mountains, I really feel like I have to get back as fast as I can down South. Whether it is for hiking, biking of chilling, these Queens of the Mountains Eiger, Jungfrau and Titlis are calling me!

You picked a perfect day to get out on a biketrip! Lungernsee does look really awesome blue.
To bad I can't see the glacier but I believe you 😉 Will your net biketrip be on your way to the glacier?

You where the only biker in the train?

Great photos of the Lake! Thanks for sharing.

That's a gorgeous bicycle ride - damn! I love mountain views and I love train rides through mountains, should definitely put this on my wishlist and go off-season maybe to avoid the crowds in the train ;-)
