How Wide Is Your Upvote Circle?

in #curation6 years ago

In my daily reading here on Steemit, which is constantly in catch up mode, I came across a post by @lukestokes called STEEM Is Not Steemit. STEEM Is More Valuable Than Steemit. I think he makes a great distinction between the two and if you haven't already, I encourage you to read it.

A Piece Of The Pie

However, a link he provides in this post (one of many links) leads to a page at steemreports.com called Steem Outgoing Votes. I'd never seen it before, and found it instantly gratifying to look at.

After plugging in my account name and the number of days I've been on Steemit, I got this:

18 days of Outvoting on Steemit.png
Source—steemreports.com

The thing that caught my eye first here was the 167 vote total. I thought, that's cool, but it seems low. After totaling the last six days of votes by hand, I knew it couldn't be the total number of votes I'd cast. I'm constantly at 30% of my voting power with 2-3 days to get to 100%, and 167 represented an average about 9 a day.

So, I adjusted the day range to capture data for the minimum (2 days) and counted up the slices. The number of slices corresponded to the number shown—the total different people I'd upvoted, rather than the accumulative number of votes.

When you roll over each piece of the pie, a percentage pops up, so you get an idea of how much you're voting for someone in relation to the rest.

Resolution

This morning I was thinking I might be voting for a small number of people over and over again and that while I wanted to continue to reward those I've already discovered who consistently produce what I feel are quality posts and comments, I wanted to steadily expand the circle. It looks like this piechart can help me do that.

Great Minds

In conjunction with the aforementioned post, I also came across this one by @rocking-dave titled There is a better way to refer to this community than to call it "Steemit". You might want to read it, as well, and see what you think about @rocking-dave's conclusion. I won't tell you what it is, but I think it's a point worth "putting out there."

Thanks bbrewer for resteeming this. It was interesting to take a look at my past, and then further and further. And to check out some of the whales and the top paid posters on Steemit.. then even to check out the people I follow and know well..

Your 0% upvotes is admirable man. I have a decently low number, and it has been going downwards as time goes by.. trying to find a balance

Kind of a cool walk down memory lane, isn't it?

I think it would be awesome to double or triple the amount of people I've upvoted something on by the end of the month (I don't think the vote-o-meter would like me if I did that, though).

re: 0% upvotes—It's easy not to do now because it doesn't really get me anywhere. I am of the mind that it kind of defeats the purpose of assigning value to a post, though, because it's being used as the means by which the post gets more visibility, too, for those big enough to make a difference, or for those receiving delegation.

To each his/her own. We'll see how I feel about it when it actually might matter. :)

A good way to do that would be headed to the new category and find some posts by people you have never seen before.. Or to get over to introduceyourself and welcome some new users onto the platform if they bothered to make a nice intro..

This will be a great tool for me as well. I think it will shed some light on how much self voting I have been doing and see if I am as balanced as I want to be.

I found the incoming vote report to be pretty telling, too. :) There's more pretty nifty things there, though. Need to spend more time poking around and seeing what else might be helpful.

Oh, I didn't see that and was wondering if there was a tool that did that.

I didn't even think to check the home page, haha, there's lots of cool things on there!

That's a pretty cool tool, I didn't realise how many votes I had done, and 17% are self votes, haha, that was literally a week ago when I didn't know what I was doing and drained my voting power down to 30 something percent. lol

It's easy enough to do, even if you do know what you're doing. :)

There's a lot of good content out there. Most of mine are from comments, as I find the interaction just as meaningful (sometimes more) than the actual post and it's content. I'm constantly learning something—facts, rumors, attitudes, opinions—it's all there, and for the most part, it's all adding value for me.

Yeah I find myself managing how many votes I do now, I'd love to vote a lot more because there is a lot of good content, but until I reach 500 SP and can lower my voting power I'm going to be stuck with 10 votes max a day :)
