Chefchaouen is a city in the north of Morocco. The original name of the city is Ashaun, the most ancient province of Amazigh. It is the newest province of Chefchaouen by law No. 688.75.1 of 23 April 1975. The city of Chefchaouen was founded in 1471 by Ali bin Rashid to house the Muslims of Andalusia By the Spaniards; Where as a fortress for the Mujahideen against colonialism. The city alone has 35,709 inhabitants (census 2004).
