🗞 CME Group CEO Terry Duffy: Government Involvement Key to Crypto’s Success

Terry Duffy, CEO of leading derivative market CME Group, has said that until governments start to accept cryptocurrencies, it is very difficult for major commercial banks to get involved in the market. Duffy made his comments during an interview with Bloomberg published on Feb. 14.

When asked if Bitcoin’s (BTC) price has hit its bottom, Duffy said that he is not sure. The interviewer also brought attention to the JPM Coin, the cryptocurrency soon to be launched by United States banking giant JPMorgan to increase settlement efficiency, as recently reported by Cointelegraph.

🗞 ‘Make Bitcoin Fun Again’: New Lightning App Lets You Buy Pizza With BTC

Over 150 people bought pizza with bitcoin this week by using the Lightning Network.

The crypto payments startup Fold, which launched the web-based Domino’s portal on Wednesday, basically makes fiat pizza purchases on behalf of hungry lightning users. Fold product lead Will Reeves put it this way:

“We’re trying to make bitcoin fun again and illustrate that lightning is at a point where it is mainstream-ready.”

🗞 Hyundai Commercial Partners With IBM to Accelerate Blockchain Development

Hyundai Commercial — a financial services subsidiary of leading South Korean automobile manufacturer Hyundai — has announced a partnership with American tech giant IBM to modernize its business model using blockchain. The news was announced on Feb. 13 at IBM’s annual tech and business conference “IBM Think 2019” in San Francisco, California.

Hyundai Commercial is reportedly “a corporate finance company that provides leasing and financial services for commercial vehicles and construction equipment.” The partnership with IBM will focus on using open source Hyperledger Fabric blockchain technology to create a new supply chain financing ecosystem for the Hyundai Commercial network.

🗞 Bitcoin's Social Contract Must Be Resilient to the Whims of Future Generations

Over the last few years, infighting and different visions has led to significant divides within the Bitcoin community, weakening the network effects no matter which chain you support. With all the arguments about scaling, privacy, consensus changes and the various forks, it is amazing that these public networks are still thriving. Nevertheless, the people who maintain the various software protocols that communicate with Bitcoin and the network’s many participants have lives that are finite — which means we don’t know if future generations will change the social contract Satoshi Nakamoto created years ago.

🗞 Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse Says JPMorgan Coin ‘Misses the Point’ of Crypto

Ripple (XRP) CEO Brad Garlinghouse says the newly-announced digital asset from United States banking giant JPMorgan Chase “misses the point” of cryptocurrency, according to a tweet published on Feb. 14.

As reported, JPMorgan Chase revealed its blockchain-powered JPM Coin yesterday, saying the asset will initially be used to increase settlement efficiency in select operations. Directly following the announcement, Garlinghouse responded on Twitter:

“As predicted, banks are changing their tune on crypto. But this JPM project misses the point — introducing a closed network today is like launching AOL after Netscape’s IPO. 2 years later, and bank coins still aren’t the answer.”
