RX Vega Frontier Edition @ 30 to 35 mh/s at 300W

Howdy fellow steemians, Nex here!

How's it going everyone?

First of all, any miners are rushing for GPUS still? It seems cryptocurrency is bound to stay with us - Full Steem Ahead!.

We at PlainBroadcast are always reading and further researching cryptocurrency and mining info - as well as some other matters!

And in the last two days something has come to my attention - the RX Vega FE hashrate for ethereum

AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition hero.jpg

As of 30/06/2017 the Vega FE is doing only 30 to 35 mh/s at about 300W !

Hey Nex, but that's utter failure, my rx 580/1080ti/FlyingDinousaur is pulling of ~32mh/s for 140w !

While that is certainly true my attentive readers, I would like you to take the following arguments into consideration:

Core overclocking would probably make a big difference with Vegas, not memory.

While 33-35 mh/s looks like nothing today compared to other cards in the market in 6 months a lot of you would be very happy to get 33-35 mh/s - and the reason why is simple:

Currently overclocking memory on RX 480/580 makes a big difference because they don't have much memory bandwidth!

Although the DAG is currently small enough to fit in 4 GB of Vram, the memory bandwidth of these cards bottleneck what the GPU is capable of as of today.

As a result memory must be overclocked to prevent that bottle neck as much as possible - which puts a lot of stress on your gpu if you overdo it;

Therefore, the core can hash at a higher rate when memory is overclocked.

The memory bandwith is such a bottle neck that the core never reaches it's full potential and as such - unless you're dual mining) can be underclocked without impact to your Ether hashrate.

Since the DAG is growing and as a result needing more bandwidth, in 6 months from now (approximately epoch #199) RX 480/580 cards that are currently getting 29-30 mh/s will only get about 17 mh/s - you can panic later guys, still 5 months to go!

By contrast currently R9 290s don't see any benefit from overclocking memory -at least this is the case with factory overclocked cards.

But overclocking core does increase hashrate -from about 27-28 mh/s to 30-34 mh/s.

This is because the DAG isn't bottlenecked by the memory so overclocking core does make a difference.

Now get this. On epoch 199 a R9 290 will see its hashrate drop to about 20-22 mh/s.

However if you overclock the memory on them it'll go back to being about 29-30mh/s.

This is because the future DAGs will have enough impact on memory on these cards that overclocking it suddenly prevents the bottle neck and they hash faster - problem solved, eh?

Now Vegas have HBM2 memory which is very high bandwidth compared to GDDR5.

As a result overclocking it probably won't do anything notable - not today, and quite likely not in 6 months form now either.

This means that:

A) Since memory isn't acting as a bottle neck overclocking core will make a difference and give you a higher hashrate:

And also:

B) the DAG increase won't have much of an impact on Vegas hashrate despite significantly dropping most miners hashrate.

In a year from now even 290s hashrate will drop off a rock but Vegas may still be doing great.

So point is overclock core probably increases Vega hashrate substantially and it will likely withstand future DAGs far better than any card in the market.

Meanwhile what today sounds like a rip off for the price may in the future be an amazing bang for the buck.

And last but not least -

300 WATTS? Thats rediculous... I'll wait to see what the various mining cards that are planned will do. 300 watts X6 is more than my PSU can even handle.

Yeah indeed is a bit high! But it was tested on ethminer if I recall correctly and like we said it wasn't configured for mining! It still needs better testing to be done.

About the specific mining card are you talking about the RX 580/570 and the Nvidia's gp-106 cards?

All of them, I want to see real world results from them all before I'm convinced. But for 300 watts i would need the hashrate to be at least 60 to justify it. Which I just can't see happening.

Yeah that's my opinion too, but It's like we said in the post only the future knows, maybe if it gets around 50 to 55 mh for a little bit less watts and a lower price tag, maybe in some months or so it can be the next big thing!
Well for the other cards, the info I've seen, is that there I'll be a 580/570 8gb and a 560 4gb only for mining from brands like sapphire and some other's for 300usd msrp for the 580 model, the other models I can remember out of my head the pricing but tomorrow I'll tell you about it.
Imo the price is a bit high for a card with no resell value, no use other than mining and 90 day warranty.
But the most interesting part is that it showed hashing away for 28/29 Mh/s (the 580 model) so if that's the stock value and still need's tweaking (oc and bios mod) they might be with a bigger potencial then the normal rx 580! But then again it can be normal 580 already bios moded and with a slight OC. Like I said we have to wait and check for real consumer testing! About the Nvidias they showed GP-106 hashing around 22-25 mh/s. So again if it has been tweaked or not we don't know.

Very informative post! I just bought two 4GB RX 480's (well 2 full systems with the cards because we all know you can't buy the cards anywhere for months or years) and I was wondering if overclocking them would be a good idea? I want to get the most out of them while mining is decent because from what I understand, it won't be profitable for long.

Thank you mate! :) soon enough we will create a discord channel so we can talk more easily with you guys and for these situations more precisely! Plus give me your email address so we can talk more easily or if you prefer tomorrow I'll create a Post about everything I did step by step so it's more visible for you and for all the new miners that need some guidance :)

More on your question:
Yeah it's damn hard finding AMD cards that even us gave up and started looking for some Nvidia substitutes (Maybe soon enough a full Nvidia mining rig and a video of it on our Steemit :p)

About tweaking the cards for better hashrates on my cards I've did some OC, undervolt and a bios mod. What I can easily say to you as advice it's that for sure you should do the OC if you think your cooler can keep the card in a healthy Temperature and the undervolt is essential for lowering the wattage from your cards! So that way they are more efficient.

So just wait till the Q3 drop when its under 500 for about 10 seconds and buy what you can. Seems reasonable.

I am actually mining with the VEGA FE using genoil's miner, I got 32-29Mhs at stock stetting, i haven't measured the power used, here is my link:
https://steemit.com/mining/@crazy/mining-like-a-scientist-i-am-the-first-person-in-the-world-mining-with-an-amd-radeon-vega-frontier-edition-29mh-s-at-ethereum

the heat makes a massive difference to the hashrate

As mentioned 300W is crazy at the moment, maybe in 10 months will have a point... But, what is the price for the card? because that's another big point :)

You don't know the price tag? You'll be surprised then :) 999 usd msrp :) cheap right? :D yeah it's absurd for us gamers/miners.

But like amd said it's not meant for us only gamers. For that we will have the Rx vega on August!

The vega Fe is for that lower professional that doesn't have the big $$$$ like a Pixar designer but still needs a good content creator card that can game in the meanwhile.

And for this reason, I'm out! XD Jokes apart.... even with a difficulty in mining double it's cheaper to add few cards more to the rig than change it with this...

That's exactly the same reason we are out too! XD at least for now Ahahaha. Yeah you are completely right it's better to have a lower starting investment then hoping to get a bigger ROI in a more expensive card. IMO though!

This point about the new memory, along with the possibility of software optimization specific to Vega cards, makes me very excited about the RX Vega cards coming out in August.

yea, but 4xx and 5xx will fall. Just put -benchmark 180 in claymore to test for a bigger dag file, and see the 480 at 12 megahash in december. the only one keeping a good hashrate from amd is 390 having 29-30 megahash in december. Yea, right...it "IF" eth will go POS...but etc will not :)). 390 also drawing 300W
