In case of the Gridcoin wallet, I would advise to backup both wallet.dat and gridcoinresearch.conf .

Exactly, because currently the beacon keys are stored in the conf file, and these are important to be able to claim research rewards. This may be changing in the future. There is a pull request to the development branch by Tomas Brod to put the beacon keys in the wallet itself.

I will make posts about Gridcoin specifically in the future, but nice to add this here already, thank you.
