🐱 CryptoKitties: an Ethereum cryptocollectibles kitty breeding game 🐱 One CryptoKitty sold for 246.9 ETH ($111.000) - Is this Madness? No, this is Crypto!!! 😹

in #cryptocurrency7 years ago (edited)

The first Ethereum based trading game dApp has gone live: CryptoKitties. CryptoKitties is a trading/breeding game where you own a unique kitty that can be bred to create unique new kitties and which can be traded with others. As with many collectibles, rare breed of kitties have already begun to fetch very high prices. One CryptoKitty was sold for 246.9 ETH, which is $111.000 currently.

Hold on, what? Yes, I'm not kidding. It can be seen as somewhat similar to digital beanie babies I suppose, which once fetched very high prices as well because of scarcity. The blockchain based CryptoKitties has made it so that Kitties can actually be owned and not simply copied, which creates scarcity. In essence one CryptoKitty is like owning a unique Bitcoin or Ethereum, except it's a CryptoKitty.

Wether a CryptoKitty is worth over a hundred thousand dollars is a whole different matter.. But I'm wondering wether this was perhaps a marketing stunt. Or maybe Vitalik thought it was funny and bought it? Regardless, CryptoKitties are traded for real ETH on the website, based on rarity of traits.

While it sound silly, I must admit the game does look appealing and I kind of want to try it out! And I'm not the only one. As of now CryptoKitties is the #2 source of Ethereum transactions (right after Etherdelta).

It also is a milestone in Ethereum, as this is probably the first real game on the Ethereum blockchain other than gambling ones. It shows that collectibles, like some card games, are exceptionally suited for use on a blockchain!

I haven't installed metamask yet, so I haven't been able to get my own CryptoKitty yet. If you have a CryptoKitty and tried the game yet, please let us know in the comments below!

Have a look at the CryptoKitties.co website to play the game!

Crypto Kitties was designed for a specific purpose: let people play with the Blockchain in a cute, understandable and playful manner. See the following article for explanation: https://hackernoon.com/building-a-bridge-between-blockchain-and-consumers-with-cats-104ac6655563

I understand it went live now? I will definitely have a look at this.

Yes it's a cool way to showcase blockchain, I agree!
Although I don't know if this will draw in non-crypto people.. It seems like it mostly appeals to people already interested in crypto. Most non crypto people have trouble enough understanding Bitcoin and how to get it, let alone trade it for Ethereum, install Metamask and buy CryptoKitties.

But I kind of want a CryptoKitty too..

Then just buy one. Why not?

Because.. because... that 0.001 ETH or whatever it costs today, will be worth 100x if I just hold on for a few years. Similar to the $10.000 pizza, this could be one expensive cryptokitty one day!

Also, because I kind of have better things to do, like stare at charts all day!

Thanks! Sure, I'll have a look! :)

OMG this is hilariously amazing! Reminds me of the breedables from Second Life that are so prolific and popular there, interesting to see the concept ported to the blockchain!

It will be exciting to see more non-gambling (in the traditional sense, breedables are their own kind of gambling) based on blockchain technology.

I'm curious if these are also like the SL breedable pets in that they require constant care and feeding... Maybe someone can make a steemit version!

It's pretty cool yes! But I think this Steempunks thing might be even cooler once it's done!

I do think Steempunks should have it's own variety of 'cryptokitties' as pets though. Or maybe item generation!

hi, do you know the smart contracts (addresses of) behind Cryptokitties? I heard there are 7 interoperating smart contracts that powers this Dapp.

Unfortunately I don't know :(
Nor do I really know where to point you to people who do know, Maybe Bitcointalk forums? Sorry :(
