There is so much FUD currently around the energy consumption of BTC miners. I have noticed it has been very pervasive on twittter and with nocoiners lately. Interesting to hear about the use cases for burning excess electricity and utilizing the waste heat. I think it is still somewhat of a problem but there are many case where efficiencies can be made. If bitcoin could replace Gold or at least some portion of gold mining then full scale environmental destruction could be avoided at least in part.

I mined for a few months with my GPU but I only have an Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti. I made a little money but my recommendation would be to buy a higher end GPU if one is going to mine. Maybe a GTX 1070 or higher.
The reason to buy a higher end GPU is that I kept my computer running even when I was away for a long stretch of time so it could mine. The energy costs of running the computer extra and the wear and tear on my computer processor; motherboard; etc might not make it worthwhile. Have you looked at this?
Thanks Chris, more great insights here. I would be interested to hear more about the energy costs associated with mining here in the UK. I don't think we have particularly cheap electricity here but maybe there is a way to reduce the costs?
