I think all alt coins depend on how BTC is doing, the difference in price changes in these alt coins to me, depends on how frightened the owners of the coins are, in Steem's case a good part is not readily available (you have to power down) so you don't see changes as significant as can be seen in other coins.
There are a lot of factors to this, that is some good stuff you point out again, some of the aspects of this currency really seem to insulate or hedge against some of the problems other coins have..... everything compared to GrandDaddy Bitcoin is always interesting too.
The deflationary aspects here and others..... are something nice indeed.
