Introduction

In this series of articles about Tykn I have been writing for the past few days, it was explained how there are several ID-related crisis in the world that even today are affecting a lot people, leaving them like ghosts with no valid identification, and no easy way to fix their complicated situation, both causes and consequences were discussed in said article.

It was also explained how can blockchain technology provide a solution for this type of problem, and end these crises once and for all by leveraging the immutable nature of the blockchain, the added security of its inherent decentralization, and the ease of access it has as a platform that anyone can connect to just by having internet access.

After discussing about NGOs in the previous article, today I am going to continue exploring the potential impacts of this technology in other types of institutions.

How could Tykn help governments in the management of people’s identities?

The government is the entity responsible for the issuing of official IDs and making sure the information about the identity of every individual is well protected, however, there can be cases where due to several reasons, it can become either unable to issue an ID to every single person being born, or it could also become unable to protect the integrity of this type of information. Therefore, it is clear there are basically 2 weakness related to the government handling of IDs that could be fixed by using blockchain technology:

Deploying mechanisms to easily reach people in remote areas

As I mentioned in the first article I wrote about Tykn, according to the World Bank, there are around 1.1 billion people with no proper IDs, and the majority of them are from Sub-Saharan Africa, where there is probably not a proper strategy to offer the population an effective way to register themselves and receive their well-needed documentation.

It is clear that in a place such as this one, the first step should be to share carefully designed procedures so the local people can familiarize themselves with how a blockchain platform like this one can work, in fact, even the team at Tykn recognizes this, in an official document they mention one of the key issues is the “Insufficient knowledge of Blockchain/Distributed Ledger Technologies within the government, municipalities and (non-)governmental organizations.” Source

But once this know-how becomes more popular, deploying operations in remote places should be easier due to the cost reduction of issuing and registering identities through a digital platform, and it might even be more time efficient as well.

Avoiding the proliferation of criminal industries that forge IDs

Another issue related to the government that might get fixed with blockchain technology, is the problem of fake IDs. It is obvious that governments must have certain security mechanisms in both the ID itself, and the system where the information is stored, but given the fact there are so many cases of people having fake IDs, and there are even criminal industries where fake passports are created, it becomes quite clear there is a lot of room for improvements.

With identities recorded on the blockchain, it would be extremely difficult for criminals to create fake IDs, because in order to do so, they would have to register fraudulent information into the blockchain, and given the fact it is a public ledger that facilitates the traceability of information, identifying fraudulent acts should be easier than ever before.

What kind of impact could Tykn have in Health institutions?

When people are receiving treatments in a hospital or clinic, the staff must have access to all of the health records for that particular person, so they can provide the best possible service taking into account conditions like allergies, previous treatments, current diseases, among many others.

One of the potential applications of Tykn, is to offer to this type of institution, a decentralized platform where all the information related to the health records of the patients is safely stored, and can be easily accessed regarding if the previous treatments were from another country, another doctor, or another institution, meaning that this platform is designed to be completely interoperable to facilitate its adoption and simplify the process of verifying the medical information of every single individual.

The end goal of a platform such as this one would be to create sort of a global medical record on the blockchain, that is always available, and can adapt itself to all types of health institutions to make it easier for the staff to trace every piece of information they require in order to do their job in the best possible way.

Besides, the capabilities of this borderless system could be improved even further, by joining the medical info as well as the identity documentation of the person, and having both of them linked through the blockchain in such a way, that every individual will always have easy access to this personal information, that despite being very basic data, it is also very important nonetheless.

This is all simply about leveraging state-of-the-art technology to provide better platforms and mechanisms in which information can be safely stored, and reliant access to this information, that is extremely basic in our modern lives, can be provided with little to none complications.

Conclusion

Blockchain technology is capable of providing our societies with a new generation of platforms that are more secure and reliable in every single way, and starting to adopt these new innovations to secure our basic data (like our IDs and medical records) is clearly a natural step we should all be taking in the short term.

So far, in this series of articles I have discussed how could ONGs, health institutions and even the government could improve the way they handle ID-related data, by adopting a decentralized platform such as the one Tykn is developing.

Further exploration regarding the capabilities of this type of platform will be discussed in future articles.
