Introduction

I currently find myself researching about Tykn, which is a project that is planning to use blockchain technology as the ultimate mechanism to protect the identification of individuals. In the first article it was mentioned that in some parts of the world, there are people that for several reasons, are unable to have access to the documents that can prove their identity, leaving them as if they were ghosts, unable to interact with society in a normal way, and with no easy solution available.

This is a problem that makes it impossible for the person to have a good life, with personal goals and social activities, because without a proper ID, living in a modern society is something that simply can’t happen, so they end up living like outcasts in a world that seems to have forgotten about them.

But there is no reason for something like this to happen in our current era, no matter how many wars or disasters there might be in some regions, nowadays there are enough resources, awareness, and technology to take the necessary measures and stop this type of problem from persisting, this is a type of human suffering that can be easily eradicated by just leveraging the latest technological innovations there are available, and developing new platforms that can protect the identity records of the people, which could also be easily integrated with all sort of institutions, like medical and financial ones.

Tykn | Using blockchain technology to solve this issue once and for all

One of the main benefits of using blockchain technology is that the information it holds is immutable, which means once something is recorded on a blockchain, that piece of information will never change as long as the blockchain itself remains active, it will always be there literally identical to how it was first recorded, it can be seen as the modern version of leaving something written in stone, but instead of using an actual stone and writing on it, we can now use blockchains and record information in them.

Using this technology also has several other benefits, for example, blockchains are naturally transparent, everything can be traced and the information will always be available for everyone to check it and audit it. When it comes to identity management, this will not only make it easier to properly identify individuals, but it will also serve as a layer of protection against identity fraud and fake IDs.

This way, blockchain can be seen as the technology that can provide the greatest protection to the integrity of identity documents, thanks to its inherent decentralization, shutting down a blockchain or attacking it to make it inaccessible is extremely difficult, and therefore, this is very unlikely to happen, in fact, as of now, no blockchain has ever been hacked, the stories and news we can read about hacks in the blockchain industry are attacks committed towards other elements like exchanges or wallets, but an attack against a blockchain has never been successful, which makes it a perfect technology to safeguard all sort of important information, like our own identities. Besides, due to the fact that nowadays it is very common to have access to the internet, using online solutions seems even more natural.

Tykn | Leveraging the versatility of having a digital identity on the blockchain

Tykn developed a “white-label identity management system” Source called Ana, that is highly adaptable and can be used to facilitate operations across different type of entities, for example:

NGOs Source

This acronym means a non-governmental organization, which is a type of entity especially known for providing help for people in need who are suffering from extreme difficulties, the refugees are a good example of this. Even though there are several types of NGO, the one that concerns us today are those that work with humanitarian help.

Every time there is a natural disaster and a crisis, it is very likely to find an NGO being present, providing help and trying to find a solution for people’s problems, when there is an extreme situation and people are unable to prove their identities, implementing the Ana system developed by Tykn, could allow people in these circumstances to easily confirm their identities, because this information would be always available on a blockchain. For children that are born in this kind of bureaucratic limbo, this system could very well create an identity for them, validate it, and record it for posterity on a blockchain, which is what they are trying to achieve with their Project Zero INvisible Children (ZINC).

One of the reasons why I use the term “bureaucratic limbo” is because there are certain laws that make it very difficult for these people to be legally recognized, and can result in children as young as 1 year old, being unable to have access to a proper identity document, which is something that should be a basic human right. More information about this bureaucratic limbo can be found on this document where the people from Tykn shared their findings after visiting a refugee camp in Lebanon.

However, it is important to notice there are cases where NGOs don’t act in a very responsible way, yesterday I saw the news from a team of journalists that managed to infiltrate one of these organizations and they discovered that this particular NGO, instead of helping the people legally without any dishonesty, they were teaching them to lie and pretend to be someone else, in order to get accepted into the border, which can be easily considered as a fraudulent act. According to the journalist, even the United Nations contacted them a message after they reported this scandal, and the NGO ended up closing all of its social media accounts, and probably their operations as well. The lead journalist is Lauren Southern and this incident was published yesterday. Since these are all very recent news, I will keep updating in future articles in case there is more information released about this scandal.

If we think about it, this is another case where blockchain technology can be used to avoid this type of fraudulent activity, no one should be lying about who they are, but if there is no proper documentation, it becomes impossible to prove the veracity of what the person is saying, with a blockchain, problems like this one would never happen again, and ID-related crises would cease to exist.

Conclusion

This is the continuation of my first article where I started to discuss the ID-related problems and crises there are in the world, what might be causing them, and how to fix them.

In this second article, I focused a little bit more on blockchain technology, and how it can be of great help in handling our own personal identities, but the truth to the matter is that this technology can improve every type of registry we use in our society, and our IDs happen to be one of them.

Since NGOs were discussed in today’s article, for the next ones I am going to cover other types of entities, specifically public entities as well as health institutions like clinics or hospitals, and how can a blockchain easily integrated all of our different information from these different entities into a single network.
