MEDIBLOC : THE BLOCKCHAIN FOR HEALTH RECORDS.

in #crypto6 years ago (edited)

INTRODUCTION

The feeling i get whenever a needle pierces through my skin into my veins has never been a pleasant one for me. And for a majority of us, we do get tired of writing our medical history down over and over again, and like me taking the same medical tests eachtime i get to see a new doctor makes things worse. This is one amongst the many dreaded problems that faces the healthcare industry. Unfortunately, real solutions are few and far in between.

The reason why one would always get to undergo a medical examination that was done previously by another doctor is due to the fact that critical health information is often scattered across multiple medical facilities or institutions, and sometimes it isn’t accessible when it is needed most—a situation that happens every day around most big cities in the world, costing money and sometimes even lives. But it’s also a problem that looks tailor-made for a blockchain to solve.

Imagine that when a doctor sees a patient or writes a new prescription, the patient agrees to have a reference or “pointer” added to a blockchain—a decentralized digital ledger like the one underlying Bitcoin. Instead of payments, this blockchain would record critical medical information in a virtually incorruptible cryptographic database, maintained by a network of computers, that is accessible to anyone running the software. Every pointer a doctor logs on the blockchain would become part of a patient’s record, no matter which electronic system the doctor was using—so any caregiver could use it without worrying about incompatibility issues

Technologists and healthcare professionals across the globe see blockchain technology as a way to streamline the sharing of medical records in a secure way, protect sensitive data from hackers, and give patients more control over their information. But before an industry-wide metamorphosis in medical data records would be possible, a new technical infrastructure—a custom-built “health-care blockchain”—must be constructed.

One key issue is laws, such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), that agrees to the centralization of health records and prohibit the sharing of said data. Without having a clear knowledge of a patient’s health status due to often limited access to their private records, those assisting patients such as doctors, emergency medical service workers, researchers are not able to provide top-notch care. This is where MediBloc comes in. Medibloc will break down most if not all of the present poor medical health information structure, and it will give the sovereignty of health information back into the hands of each individual. The team behind the project guarantees that the platform is fully compliant with HIPAA.

WHAT IS MEDIBLOC?

Medibloc as the name implies is a decentralized healthcare information ecosystem built on blockchain technology for patients, healthcare providers, and researchers. Its open source protocol and blockchain platform allows it to track and record everything revolving around your healthcare world such as doctors visits and record updates. By accumulating all of a patient’s medical history into a single, concise format, reliable, expedited patient care can take place, and individuals can be put in charge of dispersing their own HEALTH records.

Check out this explanatory video;

At the moment, health records are in different databases and there are many challenges.

  • A patient doesn’t often have an access to his own information.
  • Doctors may not have an access to all relevant information.
  • Errors are made because of the misinformation.
  • In some cases, the databases have been destroyed and information has been lost.
  • ![]()
If the health records were recorded on the blockchain, it could solve most if not all of these problems. It’s impossible to lose the data from the blockchain. It makes it easy for a patient to gain access to hie own health information. The doctors in different hospitals and countries could see the information more easily under the permission of the patient and they could give more help to the patient.
In my opinion, the idea is great. It could also hugely minimize the errors that doctors are making because of the lack of information. Let me explain more about this severe challenge in the next heading.

MEDIBLOC TACKLES THIRD MAJOR CAUSE OF DEATH

It would interest you to know that the third major cause of death is medical error as can be seen in the picture below.

Millions of people worldwide are dying because of a medical error. meanwhile, one of the most common reasons for a medical error is that a doctor does not usually have all the health information regarding a patients past. It may be in other databases that aren’t within his reach or it may have destroyed. These are real challenges that are happening right now.

    SOME KEY FEATURES OF MEDIBLOC

The main purpose of MediBloc is to allow healthcare data to be more accessible while stimulating the contents of medical information for the purpose of scientific advancement. Some key features of this awesome platform include:

  • patient centered healthcare information system:

MediBloc will put health record data back into patients’ hands and allow owners of data to decide who is allowed to view their health record information. Both information recorded from outside and inside of the medical institution, and data that was capture by a patient can all be stored in medibloc
  • Data loss/fraud prevention:

Data is backed up and stored in a decentralized data storage system.Moreso, only verified healthcare affiliates will have access to edit the medical data of a patient. Since modifications of data are transparent to all users on the blockchain, unethical adjustments are highly unlikely.
  • The ERC20 MED token reward system:

This encourages data owners to contribute to the data ecosystem through profit empowerment. This native currency MediBloc (MED) will facilitate the content sharing of records through a rewards system. Both patients and providers will be compensated for their contributions into the ecosystem, and patients will be able to use the tokens to initiate routine medical transactions (e.g pharmaceutical & insurance payments) with those partnered with Medibloc.
  • Worldwide data interoperability:

Global exchange of real-time information among the medical community will stimulate medical advancement and reduce unnecessary data repetition. Medical staff won’t have to wait for updated information, which will ultimately give you streamlined care with a greater chance of correct diagnosis.
  • Security:

The blockchain protocol being utilized offers the highest level of security to ward off data hacks of any kind.

Considering the subject of security, people often don’t realize how vulnerable the current system is to outside hacks (which are currently on the rise). As stated in Chicagobusiness.com, “by 2024, everyone in the U.S. will have had their healthcare data compromised if online theft keeps accelerating at the current pace”. Breaches like this are devastatingly costly to the medical industry. In the U.S. alone, healthcare breaches amass roughly $6 billion a year in losses.

    HOW DOES MEDIBLOC WORK?

The platform is a decentralized app (DApp) formulated on the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) which is currently the most widely used for smart contract development. As seen in the image below, three layers create the overall structure of the platform:
  • Medibloc Core,
  • Medibloc Service, and
  • Medibloc Application.
  • In the three layers, the information that will be held pertains to personal information, medical data, and MED account (users, providers, researchers) balance.

  • MediBloc Core:
This layer is a health care distributed network, a distributed database that uses the latest encryption technology to safeguard data. Since blockchain storage is limited, the Core layer supplies extra storage to counter healthcare data loss as it provides a backup and recovery system.
  • MediBloc Service: Using Smart Contract technology, this layer connects the Apps layer with the Core layer and allows for data input/output through connection with the Core layer. Internally, this layer can be divided into EVM based smart contracts and connecting the application and core layers.
  • MediBloc Application:
This layer enables people to use various applications (e.g. mobile applications and web applications) to access, utilize and manage the healthcare information.
  • THE PATIENT-RESEARCHER BENEFIT

Patients collect their treatment records from hospitals through the MediBloc application. Patients can re-use and sell their own health data on the MediBloc platform. Data storage is safe and efficient through IPFS implementation. The health data’s hash value is saved on blockchain to guarantee security and practicality of the data transaction. Blockchain records any changes made in the data and thus proves the authenticity of data.

Patients can save time and money by having easier access to their health data. They can sell their health data to researchers. Healthcare providers can reduce medical error and deliver their best care by having complete picture of individual’s health info. Researchers can make medical breakthroughs at a faster pace by having easier access to targeted health data.

The video below has much to say about this.

  • MEDIBLOC AND INSUREANCE

Patients can automatically file for insurance claims based on their treatment records if they connect their insurance product onto MediBloc system. MediBloc resolves the complex and inconvenient insurance claim process through blockchain-based smart contract and at the same time prevent data forgeries that lead to fraud activities. Individuals and society will both benefit from these automations based on blockchain technology. Implementation of smart contract on insurance Terms and Use will enable faster and efficient process for insurance registration and claim payments.

    MEDIBLOCS' PARTNERS

  • MEDIBLOC PARTNERS WITH HURAY POSITIVE
  • MediBloc has formed an alliance with Huray Positive, a leader in digital healthcare space that focuses on curing chronic illness through Personal Health Record (PHR) applications.Huray has begun its business in 2010 and has already established partnerships with healthcare providers such as Samsung hospital in promoting their “S Treatment Note” application for patients suffering diabetes. Diabetes is the number 1 disease in Korea that requires intensive care from the patients themselves. “S Treatment Note” allows users to monitor their health in real time by allowing health data collection through devices that measure blood sugar level, heartbeat and blood pressure, which can connect to your smartphone. Huray has another solution called “Health Switch” which makes analysis of the connection between your daily habit and the blood sugar level. Huray has developed other PHR applications that enable users to actively manage their own health data in real time and thus perform the necessary care based on the cues that their personal health data send.

MediBloc will aid Huray Positive clients to more securely and reliably manage their health data. Huray Positive will bring all its application users onto MediBloc platform. The users will be able to not only use the data collected through Huray solutions for their own intensive care but also exchange their own health data to researchers and pharmaceutical companies at their discretion for monetary benefits. Healthcare providers connected to MediBloc platform will easily receive patient’s past health data in a reliable format, thus allowing patients to easily seek for second opinions from various healthcare professionals.

    MEDIBLOC PARTNERS WITH SYNTEKABIO

Medibloc is partnering with Syntekabio, a bioinformatics research institute. It has developed a product called “Tinygenes” that detects various genetic variants that can cause genetic diseases. The early detection of these genetic variants through Tinygenes allows the healthcare providers to perform appropriate treatments to prevent the genetic diseases. Syntekabio has formed alliances with Korea University Anam Medical Center, Yonsei Medical Center, Sungmo Medical Center and other leading hospitals for research cooperation and product development.

MediBloc’s marketplace for personal healthcare data will be the biggest data source for Syntekabio. As Syntekabio’s research is all dependent on the big data, it will contribute to MediBloc platform as one of the biggest data consumers. From this partnership, MediBloc can enable a leading genome researcher like Syntekabio to develop products and solutions that will dramatically improve the healthcare service.

This is an interesting concept but I am confused as to who holds the encryption key to the data? Is it the doctor? The patient? The health care administrator?

Would the app be allowed on a cell phone etc?

If you lose your phone can it be hacked to reveal your info?

Is the blockchain only allowed to be stored on certain authorized computers?

the postin keys are held by the patients. i know dat woould pose a huge problem as to what gets to happen when the patient is unable to speak or type. that can be answered by the medibloc team
