In Poland: Bank hostility towards the cryptocurrency industry

in #crypto6 years ago

Polish banks seem to avoid any relationship with companies associated with cryptocurrencies. They refuse to provide their service according to a complaint from the Polish Bitcoin Association (PBA) to the regulators, on June 27th. Fifteen financial institutions were the subject of a formal complaint to the Polish government authority.

Banks want to remove crypto-currencies from the market

A document, explaining banks' deliberate refusal to provide services to cryptocurrency entities, was sent by the PBA to the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (OCCP).June 26th. It seems that they selectively close customer accounts linked to digital currencies.

"The effects of the banks' actions described are clearly aimed at blocking supporters of virtual currencies on the market, although these activities are legal and conducted with dignity," according to the document, reported by Finance Magnates. In view of the foregoing, action by regulators is necessary, and this advice and its demands are fully justified. "
The PBA reported a total of fifteen banking institutions that refused to open an account to 52 companies related to the cryptocurrency sector, as well as the closure of 25 other accounts.

MBank, the fourth largest bank in Poland, refused 9 accounts and closed 3.

At the time of writing this article, the OCCP has not yet published its opinion on the situation. The banks concerned could face severe penalties if the claim is legitimized by the authority. In addition, an in-depth investigation may be required.

A campaign on the risk of investment in cryptocurrencies

The Polish Financial Observatory announced plans to raise awareness of the risks of digital currencies, via social media a month earlier.

The Polish central bank admitted to secretly funding a $ 27,000 campaign against digital currencies in February 2018.

For the moment, there is no regulation on virtual currencies in Poland, except the prohibition of Initial Coin Offering (ICO).

However, Poland is not the only country facing banking discrimination. Ireland, Chile, Zimbabwe, India and Iran have also taken a stand against the cryptocurrency industry.
