Crypto is the Data Breach Solution

in #crypto8 years ago (edited)

The only viable solution for the data breach issue is Crypto.

A pipe dream? No. These technologies are being built as we speak. That’s the crypto revolution, and it’s just beginning.

That’s what Martin D. Weiss, Founder of Weiss Ratings, said on Weiss Cryptocurrency Ratings yesterday after citing a long list of the biggest database hacks in history.

The problem is centralization, and the solution is decentralization using Distributed Ledger Technology.

Most of the world still doesn’t know it, but we do and it’s our job to spread the word, and the rewards for doing so will be great.

The time is now, and the place is Steemit!

Centralization is the true root of the problem. So, it follows that the only truly viable, long-term solution is decentralization

The smart step to solving a problem is knowing the problem, accepting that it is a problem and then find a solution.
The world knows the root cause of data breaches but have been slow in finding the solution. Sadly to say the solution exists already but they have refused to accept it as a solution. Decentralization is the solution. Having a decentralized distributed ledger where each party posses the private key to his/her information and in any case of a data breach it would be that the user was careless with the key or something else but it definitely can't affect other users. Storing information in a private location poses a high threat. I just hope they embraces this technology quickly.

Denial is man's worst enemy.

When decentralized blockchain protocols start displacing the centralized web services that dominate the current Internet, we'll start to see real internet-based sovereignty. The future Internet will be decentralized.

The future Internet will be decentralized.

Hear, hear!

I feel awesome to know about all this before the whole world knows and uses the technology of blockchain and cryptos. The average person doesn't know what's going on right now and how fast decentralization is starting to take over. People simply have no idea and are unaware. But, we already know what's coming and we just have to wait! Exciting times are ahead of us!

Plus, investing opportunities are right in front of us, because the prices will probably never be so low once the whole world starts to use cryptos and blockchian technologies. And since the whole market is in panic at the moment, some people will have mad profits in the future if they buy now!

Yes, very exciting, and, ultimately very rewarding too.

What other crypto are you investing in?

I'm investing in BTS and SmartCash. They are so cheap right now, it's impossible to resist, LOL. Also, I invested a bit in MANNA because it's a nice project.

Decentralization is what we need to be touting.

The centralized system is wrong on so many levels. At the data level, it allows for breaches that expose people's information to those who have ill intent. The dark web is littered with data that is for sale.

Also, in terms of the enslaving mechanism, centralization, especially of the money supply means that mankind is at the mercy of a few. Now, with crypto, basically anyone can create and distribute money. That is a game changer.

As early adopters, part of our responsibility is to spread the word about the dangers that exist for the average person who remains in the existing model. We need to offer up the alternatives as they arise.

STEEM is one of those alternatives.

I remember back in the "early days" when I first heard about widely held decentralized cryptocurrencies. I immediately fell in love with the idea. For someone who radically supports grassroots democratic values, it's a foregone conclusion! As you say, STEEM is one of those alternatives, and we might even say the best of those alternatives!

I think you might like this...even though the pricing action of STEEM is a bit dark, there are some things going on that might help.

Here is a post I made...that I think will put a smile on your face.

Of course the link to the developers might also turn that frown upside down.

Looks like I've got some studying to do!

Yes! Blockchain not only would greatly improve cybersecurity but also our control over our privacy rights! If folks have been paying attention to the news, you can see that the disruption opportunities are there and ripe for blockchain to seize.

A) On security -

A two year joint research effort . . . found that at any given time, a third of the internet experiences a DDoS attack—and this figure is likely an underestimate and poor predictor of future attacks that are growing at an exponential rate.

Basically, at any given moment, your data is under attack, especially since right now it's all stored in random servers across the world. Decentralization would require hackers to basically break a majority of the computers on the blockchain itself - that's a LOT harder than just breaking into a lone server.1

Companies are spending billions on cybersecurity each year. That translates to a huge market for blockchain to tap into.

B) On privacy -
The other issue with centralized data is we have no idea what companies are doing to with our data. See the recent Facebook and Twitter scandals of late (look it up if you have no idea what I'm talking about!) as just a warning sign of what's to come with growing centralization...

Again, this goes back to the beauty of Steemit. Not only are we now being rewarded for what's rightfully ours, but we can also track and see how our data is being used.

Tl;DR - See this bear market as another reason to INVEST, not TRADE in cryptocurrency!

No doubt about Steemit reporting being state-of-the-art! We're really an example for all to follow. The leader in crypto best practices!

BTW, is this the research project you referred to in point A? https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/11/171101130507.htm

Yep, that's the one. High level summary of the study can be found here too: http://ucsdnews.ucsd.edu/pressrelease/a_third_of_the_internet_is_under_attack

Interesting read if anyone is curious - I never knew the depth or scale of the cybersecurity threat. Crazy stuff!

, “The technical term is ‘Distributed Ledger Technology’ — a secure, encrypted database shared across multiple users, companies or countries.

Indeed, the hackers will have a hard time if they try to ransomware the blockchain!

The enterprises would interact with an encrypted blockchain holding the data, and query it with an easy-to-use API à la mySQL.
As far as I know such DLT doesn't exist yet, although we can certainly write a dedicated layer on one that is already operating for other purposes (in the same way that we can store images and text into bitcoin)

About the "shared across multiple users, companies or countries", I think big players may prefer private blockchains, running over the computers dispersed across their different working locations, so they keep total control over it: otherwise their competitors may abuse the meta-data for evil goals. Changes in their privacy policy could also trigger a need of restructuring many stored materials. But this already exist (distributed databases)

Indeed, the hackers will have a hard time if they try to ransomware the blockchain!

An impossible task for the active blockchain that is truly widely distributed and decentralized.

As for the idea of individual companies storing data across different working locations, it might not be economically viable via-a-vie those who do the same thing open source. Making everything public blockchain could ultimately come down to pricing.

Brilliant thought @cryptographic.... I think, the key sentence of this article is

The key problem is centralization, and the solution is decentralization using Distributed Ledger Technology..

You discuss about crypto is really awesome...For your well article #upvote and #resteem done...

Crypto is really awesome precisely because it is the solution . . . for so many things.

Great post.Yes now days hacker are at rise. A 50 million people data isn't just a small amount of data it most important data and it was hacked so easily from the cluthes of the whale of social media that is facebook,it might not be the biggest breach of data ever happened but it will affect so many lives but still facebook is not owning upto it, there is recently a campaign going in steemit and twitter to #deletefacebook and #joinsteemit and its already trending . steemit is a safe site as it is not based on centralized system which is the root problems of all this fuss . decentralized system is the future which has already started booming, places like hospitals and clinics need to update to this kinda system cause peoples lives are at stake. its bound to happen so why not now. give up on centralized system root of all problems.

Slowly but surely, and as the momentum builds, there will be nothing that can hold us back!

Yes, that is really true. Steemit is best platform till now and it had helped a lot of people and it is easy to run too.

Great and valuable post.
I completely agree with you.
The Blockchain Graveyard is a list of Bitcoin exchanges which have been hacked. It is growing constantly, not only sabotaging the general public trust in cryptocurrencies, but also ruining companies, customers and investors alike.

The root causes of these hacks are various and often complex, but most of these breaches could have been prevented  or at least severely limited with a best practice security approach.

Thanks @cryptographic for sharing this post.

Upvoted + resteemed your post.

And I'm sure that someday best practice security will begin with decentralization.

Hello @cryptographic,

After Internet, decentralization of the blockchain is one of the extraordinary brilliant finding of humans. The technology is still at it's level 2 & applying on lots of Internet based technologies.
It's successfully added on Payments & Steem showed the way to add this technique on Social Media platforms. Now gaming industry is testing the technology. The world is moving faster & sovereignty of Internet based technologies are trying to find ways to reach their goals with decentralization & blockchain with ledgers.
Another extraordinary good article you published for an useful discussion.

~@mywhale

Agreed! Definitely one of the most extraordinary findings of human beings!
