MONERO / $XMR Hardware Wallet Update : Best 2018 Wallet Solutions While We Wait on the Impending LEDGER & TREZOR Hardware Wallet Integrations Coming.

in #crypto-news6 years ago (edited)

Ahhh.... Cryptocurrency wallet solutions.

So many cryptos...... so many wallets and directions right?

Wallet solutions and hardware updates, that is the order of this post, likely aimed at newer crypto folks entering the space.

Monero, is a serious currency/project like others out there and they have different solutions to choose from.

There are GitHub technical commits regularly moving things along for hardware wallet support -- but not quite yet ready for market.

Most Common Wallets

For crypto in general, not just $XMR

-- Paper storage or wallets:

--

Paper wallets are less popular than in the past, it seems to be a trend.

For long term storage, still a great option.

For Monero, a paper wallet solution for you can be found here at MoneroAddress website.

It's possible to use this solution in your browser, with / without the use of prefixes. Further, the paper wallet solution supports English, Japanese, and Spanish, which is just super!

It also works on devices not connected to the network for added security.

--

-- Desktop client or GUI interface

--

The Monero GUI client is the best desktop option on the market right now. In fact better than most others for most cryptos.

It also works as a full node for the users willing to look at that option. Syncing with the Monero blockchain is a bit slow, but using remote nodes should speed up the process quite a bit. Desktop clients for all cryptocurrencies take a long while to sync up initially, so it is only normal that the Monero client would follow suit.

Future development updates may help speed up this process a bit.

-- Web wallets

--

Even though web wallets represent a security risk when storing any amount or especially larger amounts of crypto, the MyMonero platform is very well-respected within the Monero community.

Riccardo Spagni, operates it, and most know he is one of the lead Monero developers , and highly respected for his technical expertise.

Your data and wallet keys are encrypted, and the service / site itself never has direct access to your funds.

It's a good option but for storing large amount, other options are usually better.

Hardware Wallet Updates:

1 / There is a community funded option coming and it seems to be coming along nicely.

2 / The impending Monero integration for the Ledger Nano S hardware wallet.

This has been in development for some time now, the process is slowly moving along The dev. working on this integration also has had to keep up with all the other Ledger tasks for their supported currencies.

Q1 2018 is still the expected arrival that XMR support will arrive for the Ledger Nano S. but it is widely known that may be pushed back by a few weeks or even months.

Steady progress is being made but just no hard date yet, which is understandable.

3 / We may still see Trezor integrate Monero at some point.

It won't be a project undertaken by the hardware developers themselves, but they are more than happy to integrate working code if anyone submits it to them.

It may not happen in the immediate future, but this option was still active as of late. 1 or more of these solutions will come to users eventually, and Monero holders will finally be able to access hardware wallets for added security.

4 / Personally last week, I was poking around the Exodus Wallet releases and news on their site, and found their progress on this wallet further ahead than expected! That was good news for many people, as their wallet is widely used by so many crypto folks.

So much Crypto........ so little time.

We are all here early in this space, we are all early adapters, bear that in mind and Remain Encouraged

Nice rundown. Myself, I use the GUI (full-node) wallet. You're right: it's a bear to synchronize. Getting it synchroed from the last time I used it (about a month and a half ago) more-or-less commandeered by desktop this morning.

But I'm old-fashioned: hence the fondness for the full-node GUI. :)

I was going to ask you last week if you were FORK-READY but then I was like...

Of course he is.

(:

Has there been a new Monero Desktop GUI? I downloaded the GUI wallet got an address and bought some fractions of XMR back in November. The transaction never showed up in my wallet. Changelly claimed they sent it and gave me some keys which to check on the block chain it came up as "false" - so now I do not know if its the wallet (takes forever to update) or Changelly. I like the concepts behind Monero but found it extremely difficult to use. I do this procedure will all coins (buy a little and send) - only Monero is still in limbo.

I really am not sure how else to help you right now.

You are actually being smart and using best practices, and that is great work.

I def. have heard of Changelly having this issue with others, I have read of it many times.

Thanks. I have all my details so i would wait until a solution comes along.

When, not if, a player comes along and provides a safe wallet option for all cryptos, it will be a huge hit.
Part of what puts off a lot of people, some older with real wealth, that would like to get into the crypto space, is the difficulty of securing a portfolio.
Too many wallets, too much complication.

Really?

What specifically did you like about this?

I just see your generic replies on my posts and others.
