While we are hearing about it most in entertainment and politics, it’s actually service (albeit a pervasive cultural issue prevalent across all career types.) 53% of all women and 19% of all men will be sexually harassed in their lifetime, but young women and women of color are disproportionately victims of workplace harassment because of their lack of discernible skills or experience to get a new job. Many are financially stuck under the thumb of their harasser and are afraid to speak up in fear of losing their job or a lack of action taken against their aggressor. For whatever reason we hold famous people and public figures to a higher standard but normal people in positions of power (restaurant/hotel/retail managers) are just as creepy! I absolutely do not think this is just an issue in industries with big names and media following, but unfortunately I think it is where we will see the most action to get them removed. I can only hope it sparks a similar movement for normal people working normal everyday jobs because this behavior is disgusting, unacceptable, and inexcusable. Happy Tuesday!

So I've been thinking a lot about this recently and I've come to the conclusion that sexual harassment is probably 10 times more common in almost every industry and context than most men think, due, in part, to most perpetrators being aware enough to not engage in predatory behavior in front of other men. Of the countless lewd comments, actions, or sexually inappropriate interactions I've been on the receiving end of, surprisingly (/s) none of these have happened in front of my 6'2" boyfriend.
Harassers are assholes, but they are smart enough to understand self preservation and act on power imbalances, either physical or professional. As a result Hollywood, DC and other places filled with powerful men will have lots of abuse and I'm sure we are only seeing the tip of the sexual assault iceberg in these industries, but you don't need to be a Senator or Director to feel empowered to assault a woman (or man). There's a power imbalance between waitress and patron and in all customer facing jobs I am sure that the problem is just as rampant, if not more, based solely on the volume of people they see daily.
