Social media? No engagements? How?

in #creativewritinglast month (edited)

Well, I’d say that lately I’ve been learning the importance of engagements in our ecosystem. Before I get to the now, lemme start from the start.

To be honest here, when I joined steemit, it wasn’t painted to me as a social media platform which ofcourse I know it’s more than that but as least it’s part of the basics.

I was always seeing someone in my contact (which am going to withhold the name because she’s no longer active on steemit )posting about the amount she made from steemit with screenshots evidently.

I ignored it initially because I was like all these scammers at it again but the posting was consistent and I could see visibly that whatever this thing was, it was inevitably working.

My curiosity grew and I wanted to make money. It seem like it’s some money printing device somewhere and giving it a try won’t hurt. Will it? Moreover I was broke and needed money.

Well, I had to find out for myself. And so I drew closer and asked about the nitty gritties. Well, I joined skeptical at first but my passion to make money was more than my skepticism.

Well, I was told I had to pay to register and I screamed, I don’t have money. Well, if we get you registered, you have pay when you start making money to which I agreed. I actually paid when I made my first bucks from the blockchain even though I saw on the steemit site that it was free to register.

My mentor as I call her said the fee was for mentorship for which I totally understand because as a newbie, it’s a lot to grapple with and having someone at your beck and call is not easy hence you gotta pay for that. So I paid but with the intension to make money and only money.

The first few weeks were very rough for me. I almost gave up but I could see there were others making it in the ecosystem but I didn’t know how. I simply persevered and was trying everything possible within my reach to be seen.

But one thing stood out for me and I guess my mentor didn’t even know the power of that. The power of engagement.

How do you come into an ecosystem termed social media platform then you don’t socialize? Nobody said anything about socializing and engaging with others. There was no emphasis on the social side of the blockchain, everyone was chasing upvotes by hook or crook.

Someone basically had to talk to someone about me about how consistent I’ve been and not getting support before Ingot my first booming vote ever. Its was traumatic.

I was basically doing the needful I thought. Breeze in and breeze out. Drop my post and then magically come back later after may hours to see upvotes and probably plenty notifications .

The questions is from who? The people use neglect and stay away from? Well, I was super disappointed. I was addicted to checking for notifications to no avail. I wasn’t doing the needful. I wasn’t growing.

I was in this state for long till I I read a post from wakeupkitty about engagement and good commenting and it dawned on me, you have been getting it wrong…

So what next? Well…more on that in the next post.
