On Articulating Your Vision by Quentin Tarantino and Terry Gilliam

The most important word in this brief interview snippet is "articulation".

To go from your raw idea to a final product is a process of articulation.

I use the word a lot when describing the process of writing and re-writing - and then re-writing again - so had to smile when I saw this clip.

In a complex product, such as a film, you need to articulate your vision so that all the other people have a very clear, precise idea of what that is.

In a more personal art, such as writing or painting, you need to articulate your vision so as to share it directly with your audience. (Beware of editors.)

"Articulate": same etymology as "article", an object, a piece of writing; an articulated lorry is connected by an articulus, a joint. So the key idea is one of connection, whether it be between an engine and a trailer or between the vision in your head and the written words.

To articulate is to connect your vision to its concrete manifestation.

The stronger that connection, the more likely it is to be understood.

Even if your aim is to make the audience work hard to reach understanding, that obfuscation also needs to be articulated.
