Project model railway #39 - making things old

in #creative5 years ago

If you buy new models (cars, wagons, trains) they are always clean and shiny. As you would expect. But in the real world, trucks are not shiny at all. They are rusty and dirty. And for the sake of realism we are going to make them look old.

As always, there are many techniques to achieve such effects. You may want to airbrush everything, but this time I want to show you a cheaper and less polluting way.

One method that I used here is to use pigments which are applied with a dry brush. This very fine powder (never ever sneeze while applying!) leaves a smooth shade and can be applied in several layers.
You need to use some spray-on glue at the end otherwise you may rub off your work.

The second technique I used are simple brownish inks. This is, simply spoken, very diluted water color.
You apply it with a brush and let the color flow into cracks and holes of the model.
Very easy and fast to use but the results are not as good as using pigments.
At best you combine both techniques.

Now let me show you how things can turn out with some before - after pictures. You can decide on your own if it's worth the effort :)

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask in the comments.
And as always, don't forget to follow for more information on this project ;)

Ah I never thought about this but it makes sense, and definitely adds a lot of realism! Great results and thanks for showing the process. I love your model village :) EDIT were you trying to use the #creativecoin tag? I see you tagged #creative. In any case, I think you should use the #creativecoin tag as your model village and all the thought you put into setting it up and creating scenes is definitely super creative, and you can earn extra crypto (Creative Coin Crypto, CCC) just by using that tag. My vote is worth a lot more $ in CCC than in Steem in any case :) Cheers

Definitely creative!

Thanks for the tip, will try it next time :)

I haven't done very much weathering on my railroad models, so I'm not very good at it yet. For a long time, I always wanted them to be factory clean.
