Attributing images to your posts - the correct way

in #creative-commons7 years ago (edited)

We all use images in the blog posts. I personally use CC licensed images by searching them via different search tools since CC license allows me to share the image without asking permission.

So far, I did the attribution just by linking the original source like this:

Don't try to click, it's an image.

We're doing it wrong

The original Creative Commons 4.0 License clearly states the attribution rules.

  • A copyright notice
  • A notice that refers to this Public License
  • A notice that refers to the disclaimer of warranties
a URI or hyperlink to the Licensed Material to the extent reasonably practicable.

These are the golden rules when you attribute someone else's work.

It's also known as TASL: Title, Author, Source, License. When you use a CC-licensed image you should state:

  • Name/Title of the material
  • Author of the material
  • Source URL of the material
  • Which license used for publishing the material.

Example

Berliner Dom by Wendelin Jacober is licensed under CC-BY2

This is an example of good attribution.

Sometimes it's just hard to find the source as you can search image by google, there are lots of alternatives of an image just passing through internet without licence attributes. We are just following who did it wrong in the first place =\

Of course if you search in places like

They give the correct information right away.

I use ccsearch to quickly find relevant images. But I understand your point, most of the images are not licensed or doesn't have a proper source. Maybe It's better not to use them at all. :)

good information for every contributor and you make easy this for many of us, I wanna see more like this, keep sharing and thanx for your solid information.

This is really important, and key to establishing proper practices as Steemit grows. Thanks for sharing this resource @emrebeyler!

This is an important consideration. I make a point of using CC0 images almost exclusively, since that license does not require attribution or put any other restrictions on revision or republishing.
