Felt decorations for babies - I BECAME AN AUNT!

in #craft6 years ago
I became an aunt again!!! I have two beautiful nieces, daughters of my older brother, and now my younger brother had his first baby boy born and I am an aunt for the third time. I love being an aunt. Grandparents have a duty to spoil children and feed them candy lol, while aunts are there for them for anything they need. Aunts are grownups that children can go to for advice, help and to feel like grownups. Aunts are cool. Aunts will always be the cool people in the family 😎

The funny thing was, just as I finished this decoration, my sister-in-law gave birth. Since she carried over a bit, if I knew the name was going to call the little guy out to the world, I would have made it sooner 😎. It was a fun little project because I really enjoy creating cute stuff for children. I already made him a baby blanket that you can see here and now the name decoration. I am currently working on a teddy bear and I hope it will be finished by the time they come home from the hospital. Let's see how this name decoration was made.

  • blue ribbons
  • thin wire
  • paper and pencil
  • cotton wool
  • small pearl-like decorations
As always, I have to promote felt as a material. It is really easy to cut and sew, almost ideal when you are sewing by hand like me and not using a sewing machine. The other thing that I love this material for is the fact that it is made out of recycled plastic bottles so by using it you are actually saving the environment. Remeber your 3 R's :

REDUCE, REUSE & RECYCLE

You can make any name you like this way, and of course, make it any color you wish. Be creative and have fun. If you need inspiration, just visit Pinterest but be careful, time flies when you are there. I have been known to "just check something shortly" there and then realize a couple of hours have passed. This moon with a teddy bear design is from there too but since a lot of people have used it, there is no way for me to source the original author. I have adjusted it a little and accommodated it to make it look like this. In a way (far-fetched way) this is my design.

Drawing

The first thing you will have to do is draw your design on a piece of paper. I usually draw the entire thing and then move on to drawing a piece by piece. Those pieces have to be cut out and used as paper molds that will help you cut the shapes out of felt.

Cutting felt

Like I have said before, those paper pieces will help you to cut the felt. First, you use them as molds to draw the same shapes on felt and when you have drawings on felt you can move along to cutting them out. Felt is easy to use but you do need sharp enough scissors. I have some 10 pairs and I use different ones for paper, felt, thread etc.

Sewing

When you have your felt pieces, you can begin to sew. I sewed them seperatley and then added them all together. I always start by sewing the smallest parts and then move on to bigger ones and connecting the parts.

Finishing touches

The last thing you do is glue small decorations with your glue gun (if you choose to have them) and add final things to your product. Those can be ribbons, fabric or even glitter sometimes. Do not forget to add something on top so that your decoration can be hung on the wall or a door.

AND this is how I have done it...

I took me around 8 hours to create this lovely little thing. Well... Not so little actually, it is one meter long. Big enough to stand alone on the door or one side of the wall. I went with creating the little teddy bear on the moon because I thought about how I want this child to reach for the Moon in his life, that is why there are balloons here that took that teddy bear up.

This is where I used wire. I made 3 balloons and then put a small wire piece inside every one of them and glued the other piece of that wire to the teddy bear's arm. It looks like he is holding them in the air. The wire is really thin and almost not noticeable. When I finished the bear I used my glue gun to fixate it on the moon. That moon surprised me with how cute it turned out. I wanted the bear to be cute but it was a fun surprise that the moon joined in on the fun.

The letters gave me a headache. Not all of them, but the N's and O's did. They were harder to sew and stuff with cotton wool then the others. Since the letters needed to be connected together, it was hard at times to not mess everything up because I was holding too much material in my hands. First I made the letter A and connected it with the N, made the N and connected it with T. When I finished the T, I have put it aside and went on to the bottom 3 letters doing them in the same way.

When I had the first 3 letters and the last 3 letters, I made the O in the middle and connected them all together. For connection, I used a thin, dark blue ribbon. When that was done, I had to connect the name to the moon and at the very end add some small pearl-shaped decorations on the letters to give them some sparkle.

When I was making the letters, I sewed a small patch-like piece to each one. I was thinking how boys will always be boys and their clothes often gets torn up so mommies need to patch them up. Those patches really added some additional beauty to the entire thing and made the final product look extra cute.

So what do you think?
Is it cute enough?

Try this project and have fun with it. You can include your kids too! I am sure they will enjoy helping you with drawing and cutting. Why not learn them how to sew while you are at it. You can give them an easy letter to try and make on their own. Good luck!

I am still selling my felt products and accepting SBD. Shipment is all around the world. You can read all about it HERE There is info on ordering, products, shippment, everything really.

There is almost nothing I can not make out of felt and even though there are some products that are available, if you have a new idea, just let me know, we will work something out to make your dream come true.

UNTIL NEXT TIME,
KEEP YOUR SMILE ON!
