The Corruption In Our Society

in #corruption6 years ago

It has become a common practice that we all complain about corruption. We never cease to be amazed by the lack of decency that many people of power are able to exhibit, mainly politicians. The newspaper reveals new cases every day and we all feel that it is only the tip of the iceberg.

Corruption is highly harmful to a society. It means a break with the pact that is in the essence of every society: the law. It also implies a perverse act, while turning others into passive victims of harm. More perverse still if one takes into account that many of the corrupt steal money they do not need, encouraged in large part by the antisocial pleasure of taking advantage of others.

"Stop fighting, because of the corruption that is around you, is like cutting your neck because there is mud outside."
-Nicolae Lorga-

All this is a source of deep indignation. However, there is another corruption that is not talked about so much. It is that of ordinary citizens who also participate in that logic, although on a much smaller scale.

Law and corruption

The law poses a discourse that imposes limits and obligations on everyone who is registered in a society. You can disagree with the law. That is, in fact, one of the great forces that drives history: the debate around what the law proposes. From these contradictions new laws arise and old ones end. Or they mix.

When you are in disagreement with the law, there are mechanisms to process it. These range from civil disobedience, to revolutions, to political debate. No one has to blindly obey the law. But unless the consequences are too serious in personal terms, as long as the law is in force, we only have the option of complying with it, until we can change it.

Corruption is born when a discourse of duties and obligations appears parallel to that which is enshrined in the law. Such discourse, unlike the legal, is oriented to seek the individual good, and completely ignores the social good. Then, everything that implies profit for oneself becomes legitimate. The others are not equal to whom their rights should be recognized, but means or obstacles to one. Therefore, they do not count. The logic of corruption is, fundamentally, the individual interest.

The citizen and corruption

We should ask ourselves if it is only the politicians, or the people of power, who act with that logic of taking advantage for themselves, even if this violates the rights of others. If some everyday situations are examined, it can be proven that many people operate within this logic of corruption. Complying with the law and renouncing one's own satisfactions, according to the common good, is not the most popular attitude.

On the contrary, what prevails with greater force is individualism. In some societies this goes to the extreme. The laws become basically a dead letter. What is imposed are the rules of the most unscrupulous. Only the legal thing is obeyed when there is someone watching. Corruption invades lives with small actions such as skipping the place in line, or taking advantage of someone's friendship to access a privilege.

Maybe that's why, finally, the great acts of corruption continue to happen. In the end, they are tolerated by a whole society that, instead of outlawing them decisively, takes them as an example for their own way of acting. Or simply becomes passive witness of all this and do not complicate the life trying to intervene to try to set limits.

Beyond the economic or political damages caused by corruption, the most serious is the way in which this phenomenon corrodes culture. Social ties deteriorate as a result of corruption. Confidence breaks down, and the sense of authority begins to fade.

At this point, civilized behaviors begin to be questioned. In practice, the law of the strongest is that which acquires validity. At this point, too, what was a society is becoming a horde that moves aimlessly.
