Japan and Uruguay are scheduled to play an international friendly on 2018-10-16. Both nations advanced to the 2018 World Cup playoffs. Japan finished 2nd in their group behind Colombia then lost 2-3 to Belgium in the round of 16. Uruguay won their group then defeated Portugal in the round of 16 but fell to eventual champion France in the quarterfinals. Both teams played a friendly in September; Japan scored a 3-0 win over Costa Rica while Uruguay won 4-1 over Mexico. The last time these nations played each other in 2014 Uruguay won 2-0.
