Just having a go at the serious guesses this week (my head still a bit mixed from learning Spanish and some Hindi last week):

1. See the cloud hanging - to be prepared for something bad to happen
2. The pant belt tightens - to be short on money for essentials (sounds very much like the English expression)
3. The wire is lost - not being able to follow the story from beginning to the end
