The Task

Dear critical thinkers,

Please read the passage below and give the best possible answer from the options in this form.

The passage

Human brain is very unique. One important function of it is to store and retrieve memories. This is called visual recognition. The process is as follows: Human eye, when views an object, triggers neural activity in the brain which forms an image in the memory system of the brain. This, as a consequence, establishes internal representation of the object that is viewed. When the object is confronted again, the brain matches it with the already-stored internal representation of it, and recognizes it immediately. The question of whether this process is a parallel process or a serial one remains to be addressed. Put differently, it is not yet known if the process of visual recognition is a one-step (parallel) process, or a step-by-step (serial) process. Different psychologists put forward different explanations. Gestalt psychologists are the candidates of “visual recognition is a parallel process” theory. They argue that an object is recognized as a whole in one step. When an object is viewed, the brain matches it with the already-stored image in one step and so it is recognized. Other psychologists suggested that the features of the internal representation of an object are matched in a serial fashion with the viewed object’s features. Different experiments have been conducted to test these two theories, and it has been proposed that the unfamiliar and complicated objects are recognized in a serial, step-by-step process, while objects that are more familiar and simpler, the recognition process is parallel, one-step.

This passage implies that

  1. Visual recognition is not possible when an object is viewed for the very first time
  2. The phenomenon of the matching process in visual recognition has been properly investigated and well understood.
  3. Visual recognition has been better explained by Gestalt psychologists as compared to other psychologists.
