@doughtaker if your around & happen to spot this :)... whats your take on the book of the dead in terms of steem prize? Does the rule - must win in the first attempt! still count if book or dead played or not..For instance if someone plays book of dead, before they have first attack but then take 4 attempts before they win...is that still classed as a winner?

I say yes, you still must win on the 1st attempt. I thought you were pretty clear in saying "first attack" and/or "first attempt" in the rules. I thought that the exception was also made clear: if you got Gobbo and beat him on the first try, then that specific battle did not count as the first attack for that stage.
We also have to look at the intended purpose of the book, and our best reference is the last IBT. The book's function is to prevent the loss of lives during a stage once it is activated. So when there was 3 lives per player for the entire campaign last time, the best time to activate the book was at the start of a stage. Then the player could have as many attempts as necessary to beat the stage foe, without the penalty of losing lives for failure. To win a share of the stage's prize pool, the player activating the book still had to win on the first attack. The fact that a player now gets 3 lives per stage doesn't change the reward aspect.
In addition, it's also theoretically possible that a player could activate the book of death and still be unable to beat the stage foe. For example, let's say there's a stage where the enemy's base strength is 11, and your class modifier is -1. First you activate the book. Then you pickpocket and end up with a key, giving the enemy +2 for a total of 13. Victory is now out of reach unless you get a good item from Gobbo. You might even need multiple good items to stand a chance, especially if Gobbo first drops bad items. Should a player be rewarded for being able to spam Gobbo encounters (i.e. intentionally do regular attacks that either fail or summon Gobbo) until they get their optimal mix of inventory items because they were invincible? Heck no.
tl; dr ruling: To be eligible for a share of the stage prize pool you must win on the first attempt no matter what items are active.

Hey I was thinking we do need an unofficial book of stuff for IBT. With your knowledge would you be cool with doing a post? would you be keen?...obviously it would expire after 7 days, but we could keep just building on it in the replies area...hehe like an unoffical journal and have a link to it... just a thought (might need some more thinking)
I'd be down for that, when I have the time... I'll try to get the first edition up tomorrow. In the future, I'm thinking that a new "book"/post gets published around stage 4 or 5 of each iteration of the IBT, if there's new stuff to be added/edited into the book. We have a little bit of material to start the IBT Book of Universal Records anyway -- actual records set by Chuck Norris (IBT #2, Choose/Make Your Path) and Slotherin Wizard (IBT #4, Stage 3), along with the quotation that you pointed out which I'll need to dig up again, and the IBT periodic table.
On another note, there's a comment that needs your attention back on the Detailed Instructions post -- you need to decide if for the final stage, we use a simple ruleset and no Gobbo, or a more complex ruleset that allows Gobbo to get involved.

I like the idea of the IBT book, and yeah around stage 4 and 5, I could also ...introduce a link to it (bring into story in a post somewhere as we go along hehe, little bit of side read for people :)
