#musicdiscovery - 2 SBD giveaway - Songs of your youth

in #contest6 years ago

Hello Steemians and fellow music lovers!

On my last #musicdiscovery post I had a very generous upvote, and thought id share the love and do a giveaway. I have also recently had a couple of small upvotes from @curie on my #musicdiscovery posts so people are starting to notice :)

For a chance to win 2 SBD all you have to do is post (or comment) about an important or influential song/album from your youth, and why it had an impact on you. Upvoting/resteeming is not necessary but would still be appreciated. I will pick my favorite and reward 2 SBD! My examples are below:

Mr Crowley - Ozzy Osbourne

I have been into metal since a young age and one of my favorites has always been Black Sabbath! However, I remeber buying the double album of Blizzard of Oz/Diary of a madman and being blown away - especially by the guitar playing skills of Randy Rhoads. Mr Crowley became a favorite of mine and my friends - whenever we had music on random and it came on we would go crazy from the opening organ/piano arangement. The lyrics are actually quite creepy to (but you would expect so from Ozzy!)

Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory

This is, for me, one of those albums that is nearly perfect - each song is brilliant, and its best listened to from start to finish! this album came out during the 'Nu Metal' era, but offered something new - more of a rap feel and also adding some electronics. I was lucky enough to see them live a few years back and it was brilliant - I think I sang along to nearly every song!

Linkin Park - A place for my head

Linkin Park - Points of Authority

Good luck everyone!

Trivium - Ascendancy

I always loved metal (slip knot, slayer, Metallica etc) but I remember new metal bands were approaching and metal was starting to really take off and evolve!

When this Trivium album was realeased I was about 13 and remember buying the cd, and right from the off the dark classical intro soothes the brain whilst raising the heart until... RAIN kicks in! This song is just straight savage! The intro riff is one of the heaviest! Such a heavy tune but also very melodic and listenable, this is what I loved most about this album. Insane guitar riffs, incredible solos, head banging beat down and a mixture of distorted screams and clean vocals - just Intense, insane and epic!!!

The whole album had me hooked and then solos on such songs as ‘a gunshot to the head of trepidation’ just blew me away!

This album also progressed my guitar playing so much as I was wanted to learn the whole thing! It was amazing and I would still listen to the whole album now, rocking out to it just as hard as ever! 🤘

Such a good album which they havent even come close to matching in my opinion 😣😣.

I saw them live a few years ago they were amazing. The drummers double kick broke halfway through a song!

Yea it’s awesome \m/ I agree they haven’t managed to match it yet, shogun was good and they have some great albums since, but ascendancy is legendary!

Ah cool I’m guessing he managed to save it quite well as he’s an awesome drummer!

I kinda lost interest in them... but yes Ascendancy is lenegdary I can agree with that!

Well knind of it was amusing they actually stopped the song right in the middle so he could fix it - and the singer akwardly told a joke to the crowd! First time iv ever seen that in a concert!

Well, you've beat me to the punch with Hybrid Theory, that really is the album from my youth. It really helped influence my taste further down the road, allowing to branch out from just "rock" into electronica, hip-hop and rap. I really think nu metal is an underrated genre.
After Hybrid Theory, I'd probably have to say Red Hot Chili Peppers - By The Way is probably the second album that reflects the songs from my youth. Throw Away Your Television, The Zephyr Song and Can't Stop are just timeless classics in my book.

Yeah well I liked Limp Bizkit (however cheesy they were!), but Linkin Park offered something abit new and more 'serious'. Have you listened to Fort Minor? I quite like them actually I listened to the album not long ago. And also the Jay Z Linkin Park Mashup I LOVE!

Good choice with RHCP - I was more into Californication, but pretty much every album they released in awesome. One Hot Minute is their most under rated !

Limp Bizkit are still on my shower playlist! But you're right, they felt far more gimmicky than Linkin Park. Sadly I couldn't get into Minutes to Midnight and pretty much stopped paying them any attention after that. Sad now really. That mashup was my gateway to Jay-Z.
Oh definitely, OHM never gets the attention it deserves.

SO gimmicky, but still pretty good! Have you listened to A Thousand Suns? Even thoguh I like Hybrid Theory more, for the singalong value, I think that A thousand Suns is Linkin Parks best (and most under rated album). Its a masterpiece in my opinion.

I didnt really like the new album it was to pop for me!

My Generation will always be a classic. In fact, I loved Limp Bizkit so much I did a youtube video in like 2006 for Rollin'. If you promise not to cringe too hard, check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N24MdhaR08c

I haven't, I'll be honest and say I didn't even know it existed! I'll get hold of that one now and give it a go this afternoon. I did hear their latest song before Chester passed away, and I really wasn't very impressed with it. I think it was called Heavy, which must have been an ironic title.

You asked about Fort Minor as well which is a name I haven't heard for so long! I remember listening to The Rising Tied many years ago and really enjoyed it, I'll have to go find the rest of his solo stuff.

You are in for a treat with A Thousand Suns! I am actually going to listen to it now! Its much different to the rest of their stuff!

I've tracked it down on Google Play Music, so I'll pop that on while I get some gardening done tomorrow (weather permitting).

👍let me know how you get on! Its a concept album so best to listen to it all in one go!

HAHA that video was amazing! I wish I was that cool!

Whenever I am unsure of what to write, I always look at your posts for inspiration and today, I have again found another one. Although I might not be posting it right away (super hectic work schedule, ugh.) I have something I could write about and for that, thank you! :) ♥

By the way, the song that influenced my childhood was from Hybrid Theory too! It's In the End, I was able to first hear the song way back 6th grade, I was 11 at the time. My dad just left us and I was struggling with almost everything in life. I just transferred school and so I have no friends. Our family driver who has been with us for 5 years (I think) brought me the Hybrid Theory cassette for my birthday. He told me to listen to the songs in times that I feel sad and lonely and so I did. Never have I ever felt lonely whenever I listen to the tape anymore and so I started meeting new friends, of course, who listens to the same music. So when Chester died, it really broke my heart but we all know that he will never be forgotten.

Thanks so much for your kind words I appreciate it!

It seems lots of others agree with me 😊 it is such a great album. Wow cassette tapes thats going back a bit!!!

Yessss ikr?!! Feeling the nostalgia now? Damn I miss those times - where I have to carefully unwind and rewind and make sure the ribbon doesn't tangle 😭

I was really influenced by my older sibling's taste in music as a kid. The first serious rock band I really got into was Rush with the Moving Pictures album and their hit Tom Sawyer, followed by Signals with Subdivisions in the 80s. The songs on these albums really spoke a lot about misfits and the problems of society which I identified with at that age. I became a big Rush fan and collected all of the CDs from their first to latest regardless if their rock or synth work I love it all.

Thanks for your entry. Im not to familiar with Rush so il be checking them out for sure! ☺☺

Since you like Ozzy, Working Man by Rush is one of their hardest sounding songs you might like.

This is also one of the songs they say in their interviews they are most proud of. The later went on to incorporate keyboards and synths in their music which some rockers did not like (but I love!) anyhow enjoy.

Awesome thanks il give them a spin this arvo ☺☺☺

Wow! Starting rock days listening to Rush! That's great! Even that some Rush songs are not easy! I love their sound and for me is one of the best trios in rock history.

Thank you for the comment! At that time I really loved the complexity of the songs. I had discovered Fantasy & Science Fiction and it all kind of meshed together. In recent times I've started watching interviews with them which is something that really wasn't accessible back then so I'm glad so much is freely available these days. It's a shame they have supposedly had their final tour and I missed it (although I saw them in the late 80s). It's rare for me to "fan" on music so I can definitely say Rush has stuck with me all this time means something to me :)

I have a lot of songs and albums which are quite special to me. I love Ozzy with Randy Rhoads, the tribute album is one of the best, if not the best, album ever made. Another song which is very special for me is "Always with you, Always with me" of Joe Satriani. In fact it is one of the songs that is going to be played on my funeral when I leave this planet (of which I hope it will still be a long time ahead). Surfing with the alien was the first album I got of Joe Satriani and I was blasted by his virtuosity. I followed him ever since, although his last work I did not really listen. But always with you always with me is for me everything a song needs... Emotion, drive and passion......

Have a great night !!

I discovered Joe Satriani when "Surfing With The Alien" LP came to my hands. It was the first instrumental album that I loved. I still consider this album my favorite instrumental album. From the opening track "Surfing With The Alien" all is great in this album. I also like a lot "Satch Boogie" and "Always With Me, Always With You".

It's an great album !! still...and will be... :)

I went to the g3 a few years back was amazing seeing joe satriani and steve vai play! I went more for steve vai but satriani was amazing!

I went years ago to the first G3 , Eric Johnson was substituted by Adrian Legg in Holland, totally different guitarist but fenomenal. Vai and Satriani where amazing ... one of the best concerts i'd ever seen....

I couldn't go to any of the different line ups of G3. This year they are coming with Uli Jon Roth but not sure yet if i can go.

Yes I saw it, Uli Jon, John Petrucci and Satriani. Not sure If I go either..
