I totally agree with you. Another thing is that Steemit seems to look like a cult wherein only those who know themselves help one another. If you're not in the clique you get frustrated. A lot of my friends gave up in the very first month they're introduced here. It's discouraging you keep spending productive time to make post and they won't attract even $0.1 and then you see others whose posts attract so much upvotes and $. You look at the quality of those posts and compare them with yours, you just feel like giving up. This in addition to the points you raised will help Steemit grow.
On steemit, when you build relationships with people it is only natural that you will upvote their post more, hence the circle jerking. But the mistake they make is that they only stick with the people they have built relationships with, instead of been generous to others too.
