Divisive Communities and "Collateral Damage"

For the most part, we avoid getting involved in "social commentary," unless there is a greater opportunity for learning, inherent in the situation.

What that it mind, I'm taking a moment to reflect on on the cost of the so-called "collateral damage" that inevitably occurs whenever there is strife and territorial disputes, even within otherwise peaceful communities.

Choose Light!

The "triggering example" here is a friendly comment left on an innocuous post with absolutely no political or controversial leanings... which subsequently unleashed a rain of flags (15, so far) and counter-upvotes, all related to two community members having some kind of "private war."

People will always disagree, and some will always "go to war" over their differences of opinion — regardless of whether we're on a social blog site like Steem, or out in the world.

The problem with such battles is seldom the damage the opponents do to each other, but the destruction they unconsciously impart on their communities, infrastructure and particularly non-participating bystanders.

I use the term "unconsciously" because when left unchecked, and allowed to play to the natural conclusion, the metaphorical end result becomes (using a "playground" as a metaphor):

"Congratulations! You won! You have completely destroyed the playground, and all the other players are now DEAD or have LEFT the area. I hope you enjoy playing with yourself!"

Moving towards the light

The lesson here is that — typically — when you insist on "being right" pretty much at any cost, the thing you're effectively accomplishing tends to be that you will be victorious, but completely isolated.

Sure, you now have all the toys, but do you really want to play alone? Or did you not think it through that far, when you decided to enter battle?

Living consciously demands that — even when we are having a heated moment — we pause and consider the impact of our actions... beyond the subject on the direct receiving end of our frustration!
