Suomibotti, the Finland bot
I am Finland bot - the name Suomibotti is "Finland bot" as a direct translation.
If you let an engineer come up with a name for a bot, it'll be very describing.
My purpose is to upvote, curate and support the growing Finnish community of Steemit. So far I'm mostly upvoting all Finnish posts with the limited power I have and giving bigger upvotes for high quality content by Finnish authors.
More important than this, I'm providing information on Steemit and how Steemit works for Finnish users and potential users.
So what does Suomibotti do?
As mentioned, the focus is to give all Finnish users a small amount of support with smaller upvotes, currently it is a 25% upvotes. The main purpose of the constant small upvotes is to support all the Finns to stay on the platform, never finding themselves in a situation where they get zero upvotes for their posts.
Then outside of the small upvotes, I'll be manually curating content and finding specially good content - greater focus on new Finnish users with great content. Not all content is equal and due to this, I want to support the authors in attempt to improve themselves and their talents.
I'm trying to be objective on this and not show my personal preferences on different topics, but focus on the quality of the post instead of the genre or the points of view chosen.
In addition to this, I will try to keep plagiarism outside of the Suomibotti community and advise users not to plagiarize.

Is it only upvoting?
Oh no, no!
The greater attempt is not only to upvote and create a community, but share information on Steemit in Finnish.
So far I've written already two posts trying to explain what Steemit is, how different things work and how to join Steemit. The material is supposed to be a good reference for users who are not yet members of Steemit or who are new on the platform.
First post, explaining Steemit briefly:
https://steemit.com/steemit/@suomibotti/mikae-on-steemit
Second post, explaining how post payout is determined:
https://steemit.com/steemit/@suomibotti/miten-julkaisun-arvo-maeaeraeytyy
Even though most users on Steemit are using English, not all people in general are comfortable with English and they might not find all the necessary information in their own language.
Are there any other plans?
The next plan is creating an email account for users to contact Suomibotti and to allow Suomibotti to create accounts for the future Finnish users!
The purpose is to keep the account creation normal, so single users will not to gain advantage from the users with the created accounts. The community created accounts would more likely to be activated and interested towards the community and appreciating other users as members of community.
In general, Steemit is a platform on which I wish to see people helping out each other with all the power they have. That's why actions like this are needed.
Update: Finnish people can contact email address [email protected] and we can see if you can get an account created!
This service is meant only for users with no existing Steemit account.
Is Suomibotti only for Finns?
Pretty much yes, but you do not need to be a native Finn. What I think is most important is living in Finland or feeling deep inside you are Finnish. Most of my posts are in Finnish, but it doesn't mean you need to know much Finnish to be a part of the Finnish community!
We already have Finns who speak instead Swedish, English or other languages. Finland is not only about Finnish.
Even though the userbase on Suomibotti is somewhat limited, Finnish content creators have been very limited so far and with the special nature and high education level of Finland, I'm looking forward of bringing the whole Steemit forward by giving space for premium content creators.
Thank you for the read, if you have any questions on Suomibotti or anything else, feel free to leave a comment.
Löytyihän se "suomiporukka" :)
I support your effort to increase participation by non-English speakers on the steemit platform, but I don't see the utility in 'never finding themselves in a situation where they get zero upvotes for their posts.' Some posts deserve to get zero. This isn't a minimum income situation for disadvantaged citizens; steemit's a platform for earning value when you create value. There is no cost to post, so there is nothing to subsidize.
I don't expect to change your mind, but I hope you will consider the possible effects on the quality of the content that will be produced by the community you hope to encourage. We currently have a major problem on the platform of collusion to upvote content of questionable(lets just say it, bad) quality for the sake of extracting money from steemit. People who make poor quality content are not helping the platform. I cannot speak for anybody else, but my priorities put steemit, the platform, at the top, above any individual or group. If the platform fails, the other efforts at community building will have been pointless.
Steemit failing is a very real possibility. What keeps it afloat is demand for the steem currency and everything else linked to that. If we make it out of the novelty stage, it will be because people want to be here in a community of worthwhile content and people. If people are just putting up shitty posts and quietly siphoning off steem to exchange for dollars, it's just going to be another failed experiment of human greed, another example of why we can't have nice things.
I've gone a bit off the rails here, but I'm hoping I've at least made a little bit of sense. Thank you for adding to the steemit community, and I wish you luck with your endeavors.
Hi, thank you for leaving a well thought comment on this one. I do agree, some posts deserve to get zero. However I do not think it's an issue to give few cents upvotes for lower quality content as long as they are not trying to rip off the auto-upvoting by creating constantly zero value content.
It was a very good point to bring this up and I should make it clear that zero value content creators will be left off from the upvoting list.
The second thing related to the low quality posts is the manual curation. With the possibility of earning higher upvotes with better content, I'm hoping I could attract people to write better quality. The aim of becoming better and improving their earnings with that can start from small things.
I'm usually comparing the payouts of the posts to salary level in different countries. In Finland, I wouldn't assume anyone would go through the work to scam a bot for small upvotes, as the typical low salary job can pay 10€/hour (before taxes). This in dollars is around 13$ per hour.
A typical user would need to create quite many posts with few cent upvotes to gain the same amount of money they would get by using the time working.
Shitposting and Steemit failing are real threats and I admit it. I have no intent of supporting greedy spamming for rewards, but instead I'm hoping this project can lead to more better quality authors posting.
Thank you for your reply. I should have been more clear about my expectation of abuse of your curation method. I do have a biased belief that Finns have higher standards and decency than to scam a few cents posting zero to low quality content, but I think the problem will be with posters who can appear to be Finnish to a voting bot. I am always amazed at the level of cunning when money is involved. And as your account grows, the few cents for a 25% vote will become a larger amount. Anyway, just a few things to consider. No good deed goes unpunished. Plan for it.
Tervetuloa ja kiitos! Perhaps we should start building a sort of a community within steemit?
Tervetuloa vain :) That's something I'm trying to do on long run. Gather up all Finns, bring more Finns on Steemit and create a special Finnish place of our own.
Great work Suomibotti. Suomalaisten on hyvä tukea toinen toisiaan.
I have no known Finnish blood, but I came from a community very heavily Finn (including my cousins who are half.) I spent some time studying Finland and the culture which really helped me understand my own upbringing - things like: the implied "please" or "thank you" - rarely said, but always inflected; looking at the feet of the person you're talking to... Suddenly, I had this revelation about my home town! (NW Oregon, in case you were wondering.)
Anyway, I really wanted to comment and give you a "thumbs up" because the more people from other parts of the world who get involved in Steemit, the better - and a bot to translate as needed is important. Good job, keep it up!
Thank you for the comment, it's nice to hear such things about places so far away. Great cultures have their impact around the globe :)
Interesting.. Is there actually a lot of finnish people here? :o
Not that much, at least yet :(
What do you think about having a scandinavian meet up sometime this year? I'm currently in Denmark and would love to have a Steemup one day!
Well wouldn't sound crazy, unless if you notice that Finland is not a part of the Scandinavia.. :(
Yes of course sorry I was tired and I’m Canadian I should have said all the Nordic countries ;)
How you will detect finnish contents? i mean, no tags needed?
No tags needed, I'm just maintaining a list of Finnish users as it's usually more or less easy to detect a Finn :)
Nice post... Great sir
awesome initiative to promote diversity and culture on the steemit platform. I believe this will increase international and cross cultural exchanges! Keep up the good work!
