Reading The Streets

Threat assessment is an important, but overlooked, aspect of community and self-defense. The rise of fascists and reactionaries in the United States and elsewhere leads to modern models. One model might be the S.A.L.U.T.E model.

The "S" is for size or strength. How many are there, and are they armed, or do they appear to be armed.

"A" is for actions or activity. What are they doing; are they massing, are they harassing people, etc?

Location and Direction make up the "L". Where are they and where are they heading, or are they staying put.

What are they wearing? This is the "U", are they wearing hats or T-shirts with flags, do any of the group have distinctive tattoos?

The time and date of the observation matter. That is where "T" comes in.

Is the threat armed, or are they carrying other equipment. Even a cell phone could be used to capture pictures or videos to doxx activists or others. "E", represents this.

The more information about a threat, the better the response can be. "MAGA on the move" does not provide a lot. "5 potential agitators, appear unarmed. Gathering on 3rd St, heading towards Release Refugees rally. Wearing red MAGA caps, one member with S-18 tattoo. Observation made 12:30PM April 6. One may have pepper spray, another may have tactical baton," does.
