Communities Have 'Officially' Begun... (My Thoughts)

in #communities5 years ago (edited)

Most know that the long anticipated 'Communities' have officially begun as of last week, here on the Steem/Steemit platform.

With the stepping aside of our 'Most Supreme Leader' and under 'new' management, the administrating team was given the go-a-head to release 'Communities' at it's current state of development.

So...here we are, happily scrambling about Steemlandia searching for Communities that we feel good about and possibly 'fit into' accordingly.

At least, That's what 'I've' been doing :>)

So far, I've hit the 'Subscribe' button on seven of the many that have been appearing upon the 'Explore Communities' page. I've listed those that I'm now designated a 'Guest' with the exception of @DeepDives, where I am a 'Member'.

  • Deep Dives

  • The 'Guest' designation must be a preliminary status, prior to being reviewed and accepted or rejected for membership? I'm not certain, but some of you guys who have been active with 'Hives' (Beta) might know, and are welcomed to comment accordingly, below.

A few things concern me with the advent of Communities and 'how' they are beginning to form.

    1. 'Owner' Designation
    2. Acceptance Criteria
    3. Fallout from 'Rejected' Guests
    4. Potential for 'Bullying' Non-conforming 'Outsiders'

In actuality...I have additional concerns (not fears) about the affect/effect of some communities possibly becoming a sort of 'Elitists' group obtaining too much power and control over other individuals and/or groups.

Sadly, in a sense, we already have the formation of groups 'secretly' and 'openly' acting to suppress, oppress and punish others through various methods.

Many of us arrive here, sign up and begin creating on Steemit, with a very positive and hopeful view. We get the 'feeling' that our experience here will be quite different than what we encounter out there in the 'real' world, as well as what we experienced on most other Social Network sites. Only to find that it is 'not' different at all in most respects.

Probably, the most disappointing aspect for many users/creators is the apparent disproportionate 'reward' allocations being distributed to 'some' individuals, by certain 'other' individuals by way of 'Circle Jerking' in various forms.

Once a new user on the platform becomes suspicious of possible 'inner circles' having been formed to benefit mostly each other, after doing a little digging and analysis, they find 'true' links substantiating such activity.

Experienced members of this 'general community' know the above practice exists and handles it in their own way, according to personality traits. Some merely accept it as 'the way of the world', some attempt to expose the "culprits", some try to win favor and of course...there exists users who fall into a different category altogether.

    Anyway...getting back to the point...???

Communities, in my opinion, will have a mixed affect upon us, some for better...some 'not'.

It is my hope, that Communities will result in a 'mostly' better experience for us all, thereby helping to 'grow' a wondrously, lush garden of delight, as opposed to a dusty field of noxious weeds.

Have a happy day, my friends.

    Ciao

Yeah, we all hope that communities help to improve content discovery and hopefully create spaces that are organic, member driven and inclusive rather than simply top-down hierarchies.

@preparedwombat is right, people are free to create their own communities if they're disillusioned with the group or disagree with their development.

As for #deepdives, you were pre-approved based on previous participation and interaction with the project. Others / Guests will have to wait until we streamline the best practice for inclusion and membership in general. It's still early days, here's hoping for the best,
    Thanks!

Thanks for the response and information @DeepDives … Like you, I'm hoping for better days ahead, as well :>)

Hoping the overall affect will be better.

Did you 'hit the road' yet for Greece?

Going this coming week , covid in north Italy , better go before many borders close ,,,, or travel gets restricted. Still the Alps are a bit icy , let's hope for rain ;-)

Bon Voyage' (Did I spell that correctly?)
For a minute there...I thought you were referring to a town "Covid" in northern Italy. I spent two years there and never heard of the place :>) I must be tired; goodnight...ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

(I spent a little time there too- couple of months- was wracking my brain to place this 'covid').

Lol , covid19 i meant , as my google maps comes up zero on Covid Italy other then a spa centre health shop near Milan , named Covidien Italia Spa . Nope , after entertaining many Chinese tourist's around Venice Italy started purging it's rural area's from unwanted aspects . Better stay clear from it , avoid the madness .

Breaking : All train traffic between Austria and Italy has been suspended due to #coronavirus concerns.

Planning to skip Italy , might even have to reroute more north , hoping to cross Austria in to Slovenia Croatia . .... i better start packing , and go soon .
Damn , it was supposed to be a relaxing road trip , starts to feel like escape from disaster .
This hysteria could make any encounter with local police idiots a risk 10 times greater as before . How luck and doom always go hand in hand for me , balanced they call it . ;-)

As my car drives on grippy summer slicks i planned a route south from the Alps true Italy . Now i am of , investing in winter season tires , if this madness spreads i could end up in Poland , searching for some Deliberator ,.. who's probably on a old motorbike ;-)

....you poor sod, imagine that! lololol

I like the communities because it is a step towards having the interfaces separating content more allowing better filtering and exploration with a focus. The catchall ones are obviously still there. As they grow the ones who truly mod their communities will last and the ones that allow vote whoring will go down because we all like to be a bit pretentious and say we create content because we are creators so we look down at those who vote whore and create groups where we get comments on our content but also nice votes which we don't acknowledge because we made the content right... I think I missed the train... Anyway waiting for things to chill and if I partake in communities then it will be because it is a natural fit. Maybe I should then write more things for my own Fuckit community lol.

As they grow the ones who truly mod their communities will last and the ones that allow vote whoring will go down

Perhaps, but the 'vote whoring' will continue on, one way or another, as long as it is 'possible' to do so with the 'inner circle' participating and condoning the practice.

Just 'sayin'...ya know? Yet, communities might help those who deserve more attention and recognition, along with 'some' protection against attack from malevolent members.

    Ciao, my friend.

The topical communities definitely, I think the generic ones will be the same as the tag spamming. No protection there :) Maybe I can buy protection with a delegation. Alas, I will be the prettiest little vote whore I can be ;)

Sometimes it is wise to 'buy' protection :>) guarding against STD's (Steem Transmissible Disease)

There are going to be both positives and negatives with communities, and of course we all hope that the positives far outweigh the negatives. All you can really do for the moment is join the communities that you have an interested in, and see where it goes from there:) I'm sure we've got a good one with @deepdives, that for sure. I'm looking forward to the future of steem!

I think we have a good one with @deepdives as well...
Thanks for your input @palikari123 :>)
