Shopping in Colm .. what? Colmado, this is the mom and pop shop on every corner. A popular place to exchange or learn news. Probably in no other place the "news" of the street spread as fast as in the Colmados of the country - a message system of the locals. In most cases they are small and grubby and of course meeting place for the always thirsty Dominican.

Colmados are really a kind of landmark of the Dominican Republic. There are now more than 44,000 pieces on the whole island.

The Colmado is not indispensable, because where else you can buy sugar, washing powder ect. in microscopically small quantities and all this mostly on credit.
The Colmado is grocery store, village pharmacy, small disco and meeting place for young and old, both, for foreigners and locals. Everything goes its regular, caribbean course, nobody is in a hurry and everyone has time for a chat.

Everyone who's living here knows about the need for a Colmado and if I imagine these small unhygienic partially leaking and half-shattered shacks would one day disappear, a part of the Dominican flair will be lost.
