ColorChallenge SundayPurple --Globe amaranth/bachelor button - Ban mai ru roy in Thailand--

in #colorchallenge7 years ago (edited)

I found this flowers exactly one week ago, when we walked back home in the early afternoon from a Thai funeral.
The original name is gomphrena globosa. It is a native plant in Brazil,Panama and Guatemala and a very popular flower gardening plant around the globe.Other colors than purple are pink, red and white.

It grows up to 1-3 feet high.It almost blooms all year around. This plant is fairly drought tolerant and very heat tolerant. The flower attracts butterflies.

Globe amaranth is good for cutting and drying. It will hold their shape and color indefinitely. In Hawaii and Nepal it's used as long lasting garland. In Trinidad, they boil the flowers and make tea which is used for cough, diabetes, baby gripe and other things.

In Thailand they say the tea is good for the liver.(No wonder they say that.....)They drink that disgusting Thai Mekong (rice schnapps) which smells more like a disinfectant.....I'm getting sick only from smelling it....
A good and free tip from me:If you are in Thailand, stay away from that.....not good to drink at all and not good for your health. If you do,think what I said when you gonna have your worst hangover ever the next day......

Hi, Urs! Wonderful images of Globe amaranth! I don't think I've seen any of those in Phuket! Btw, Mekhong is Thai whiskey, and "rice schnapps" is called Lao Khao:) And yes, it's not the most pleasant drink I've tried:) Where did you take this photo, btw? Great to meet someone staying in Thailand as well, followed and upvoted, cheers, mate!
