ColorChallenge: ThursdayGreen - Lenten Rose, or Hellebore (Helleborus spp.)

Seedpods and flowers of Lenten rose.

Blooming in late winter/early spring, the Lenten rose does flower roughly coinciding with Lent -- but it's not a rose. This easy-care perennial member of the buttercup family likes moist, shady areas and is one of the first plants to bloom as the Earth starts to consider spring. The flowers are insignificant but are surrounded by sepals that masquerade as petals. The sepals, which persist for months, range from greenish-white, through pink, to shades of deep purple, with variations in color often seen on the same plant (see below). There are many named hybrids and varieties of hellebore.
