Color Challenge - Friday Blue Optical Effect Of Clumped White Snow

image

An optical effect which causes the slight blue color, is the same optical effect, Rayleigh Scattering, that the atmosphere and sky experience and why the sky is blue to our eyes!

Why Blue?

Snow is white because it reflects all wavelengths and most of the sunlight, the only light remaining that passes through has its red and yellow wavelengths absorbed by the frozen water molecules (a chemical property of the water molecule) as its scattering about the medium and thus only the blue wavelengths remain visible!
