With over 2000 cryptocurrencies and new cryptocurrencies entering the market every day, it is very hard for investors to keep track of them. Due to the enormous amount of cryptocurrencies out there, investors are in a fix to choose between numerous altcoins. This is the problem CoinGecko aim to solve.

CoinGecko is a platform that gives the price and adequate information on listed digital cryptocurrencies. Founded in 2014 by TM Lee and Bobby Ong, it evaluates coins both quantitatively and qualitatively. It is a ranking platform that gives users qualitative and quantitative information of their cryptocurrency. This is possible via the use of certain metrics namely

  • Market capitalization
  • Development
  • Social media activity
  • Trading volume
  • Gecko score

CoinGecko currently track close to 3,000 coins from over 200 cryptocurrencies exchanges.

According to CoinGecko,

@coingecko provides a fundamental analysis of the crypto-market. In addition to tracking price, volume, and market capitalization. @coingecko tracks community growth, open-source code development, major events, and on-chain metrics. Source

In addition to being a cryptocurrency tracker platform with a lot of metrics used to rank coins, CoinGecko have the

  • ICO section
  • Cryptocurrencies comparison section
  • Trending cryptocurrencies sections and so on.

Ranking via the market capitalization will be discussed in this article.

CoinGecko is free to use and anyone anywhere can use it. Users can sign up to access more functions free of charge.

I have been a registered member for quite some time and I like the additional functions for registered users.

Registration is easy and straightforward without any hassles. You only need a functional email, 8 characters password, accept CoinGecko terms of service and privacy policy. You can choose to subscribe to CoinGecko daily newsletter or decide to opt out. Passing the reCAPTCHA will enable you to sign up. A confirmation email will be sent to your inbox for you to verify and start using CoinGecko with additional functions.

As a registered user, I have a dashboard where I can monitor coins I added. Steem and SBD are the only coins I added. I am able to view detailed information about the 2 coins at a glance.

The informational shown are

  • Current coin price
  • 24 hours volume
  • 24 hours high price
  • 24 hours low price
  • Price chart

It is possible to modify the chart image to anyone that suits you. The best part of it is the ability to download the chart. You can download the chart as PDF document, PNG image, JPEG image, or SVG vector image. It is possible to change the date range for the chart. You can also see the price changes of the coins added. The dashboard gives the necessary details about the added coins at a glance.

Adding a coin is simple, you need to click the Add coin button, search for the coin of your choice, and click the + button to add it to your dashboard.

Market capitalization

This is the most popular metric used to rank cryptocurrencies. It is believed that the higher a coin market capitalization is, the larger its market reach. Market capitalization is simply the current crypto price multiplied by the circulating supply.

When you visit CoinGecko for the first time, the default rank is by market capitalization and the price is shown in USD.

1b.PNG

The ranking is displayed in a table format with 9 columns. Each of the columns provides additional information on each ranked coin. The first 100 coins by market capitalization are shown and others can be viewed by clicking the navigation buttons below.

The columns are as follow

  • #
  • Coin
  • Price
  • 1h
  • 24h
  • 7d
  • 24h volume
  • Mkt Cap
  • Last 7 Days

The first column is a coin position in respect to their ranking. You can see a star symbol in front of the numbers, this means favorite. Selecting any star attached to the coin means you choose the coin as your favorite or one of your favorites.

The second column named Coin displays the cryptocurrency ticker name along with the coin image. This is a popular way to identify cryptocurrencies and one of the reasons it was used.

The price column displays the average price of each coin across exchanges. With over 200 cryptocurrencies exchanges tracked, the price displayed is an average across the exchanges listing the coin.

The next 3 columns show the price change in 1h, 24h, and 7 days. The price changes are displayed in percentage and highlighted in red or green color to aid visibility. The red color having a negative percentage score indicates a decrease in price while a green color indicates an increase in price.

The seventh column shows the 24 hours volume of the coin. This is the total volume of the coin being traded across exchanges. The price is given in USD by default.

The eight column gives the market capitalization which is the default ranking. It is the current coin price multiplied by the circulating supply.

The last column gives the coin price chart in the last 7 days.

You can also decide to select a different cryptocurrency or currency that the cryptos price will be displayed in. You can decide to display the coins price in BTC, ETH, or EUR instead of the default USD.

There is also a filter option where you can choose to display coins based on

  • All Hashing Algorithms - filtering based on numerous hashing algorithms such as Delegated Proof-of-Stake, Proof of Research, and Proof of Stake etc.

  • All Platforms - Certain platforms have other sub-coins called tokens. These tokens are created on certain platforms. You can choose to select tokens associated with platforms such as Ethereum, Bitshares, VeChain and so on.

  • All Categories - This is a filter option I often use when I want to view coins in certain categories. The coins are categorized based on their use case such as media, sports, gambling etc.

Comparison with coinmarketcap

Coinmarketcap is a top platform that ranks coin based on their market capitalization. The coinmarketcap ranking only takes the quantitative data into account. It doesn't give detailed information like CoinGecko. You can only view the ranking of coins or tokens by market capitalization/circulating supply/total supply. It doesn't include in-depth information like CoinGecko.

Conclusion

The presence of numerous filter options on CoinGecko will ensure it is the top choice for many cryptocurrency enthusiasts who seek detailed information on a particular coin. I personally enjoy using the platform because of its numerous functionalities.

Hello @zoneboy!

Thank you for this contribution. Your review is rather informative and well-illustrated with relevant graphic content. Keep up the good work.

On the content side, this was a mixed bag for me. You definitely went into detail regarding the main features of the platform, and managed to create an interesting blog post that contains useful information about the project, however I have to admit that I wanted to read a bit more about your personal views and experience of using the platform. Your opinion is the unique feature you can add to your posts, and this is the kind of content we particularly like to see in blog posts. Regardless, I think that you did a really good job in putting all the information together.

That said, there were proofreading issues, but not to the level where it hurt the reading experience. This is a nice contribution, and I look forward to reading the next part of this series.
