There are a number of other debit cards that offer better (and usually zero) fees for buying things with your bitcoins. If Coinbase is getting greedy, drop them and get a different card.
Check out the Shift card, Bitpay, etc.
Shiftcard integrates with Coinbase and Dwolla exclusively, however.
