CODE .... Africa's Revolution

in #code6 years ago (edited)

So for a while now, I have been getting direct messages from folk telling me about how they don’t really have a Computer Science background so they can’t code. For those that put in a little effort into learning online, they eventually got tired out and that was the end of their coding experience.
Now my question…
What is the big deal about a ‘computer science background’ in a country like Nigeria where lecturers in higher institutions take pride in teaching teach obsolete languages like Fotran?
Fotran!!!
What job opportunity will a numerical and computational analysis language originally created in 1950s create for a 21st century grad student?
They come out of school and are unemployable because there is almost zero need for the programming languages they were taught.
The few still interested ultimately go back to learning up-to-the-minute languages, and to make it even worse they have to unlearn, then learn these languages from scratch; “Hello World”. There is almost no difference between these ones and others with no Computer Science background.
About two years ago, The vice-president of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbanjo while in a conference meeting in Abuja organized by the Federal Ministry of Education and the Education Data, Research and Evaluation in Nigeria, spoke on the saddening state of education in Nigeria and poor teaching methods as the bane of progress in this sector.
So two years later, what has changed?
Your guess is as good as mine…… NOTHING!!!
So why concern yourself with the lack of a ‘Computer Science’ background when you can build one even better?
I am sure you’ve seen the name ‘FavCode54’ making the rounds on Facebook and many popular blogs in and out of the country… YES?
FavCode54 is the brainchild of tech genius Favor Ori, a Nigerian.. Yes you read right, Favor is a Nigerian, and thats not even the shocking part, he is from the ‘Aba' in Abia State you know and have heard so much about…
There’s more to his story I won’t talk about here, you can read all about him on favcode54.org/blog.
Favor Ori started FavCode54, formerly called #CodeWithFavor2018 to train aspiring developers from beginner and intermediate stages to experts in various web and mobile development technologies who will be employable anywhere in the world.
CodeWithFavor2018 started out with 40 learners who have already begun classes with world class mentors and are well on their way to achieving Favor’s dream for them.
Students were offered a variety of courses to choose from including front and back end web development, mobile development for both android and iOS, Data Science, Python, UI/UX and others.
In a country where mobile data is a very expensive commodity, every student is given unlimited data for downloads of course materials.
Did I forget to mention that this is FREE?
All the payment you need to be a part of this program is your determination and dedication.
For those that think they missed out on the opportunity to join this sky-bound train, be happy, it just got batter for you.
About a week ago, FavCode54.org entered a partnership with Northern Nigeria tech giant, Startup Arewa to train 5000 dedicated individuals to become expert software developers. If you haven’t applied yet, apply now using this link apply.favcode54.org
I know for some, the question on your mind is ‘How is FavCode54 different from other learning platforms I’ve been on without progress’
Here’s one way FavCode54 will achieve this.
Learning on the platform is self-paced with metacognitive strategies on FavCode54 learners dashboard so each learner sees their progress against the expectations of the team for them.
The mentors will also adopt the best teaching methods geared towards helping each learner learn and grow their skill on a one-on-one or group basis, employing classroom discussions, collaborative homework, and learner feedback.
The world is turning into a tech hub, do yourself some good and be very relevant in this new world.
