Enquiry-based learning: Be a junior chef My entry to the #makemesmile campaign week 2
Background
On our recent trip to Bangkok, my boy had his first taste of exploring the kitchen all by himself without help from mom or dad. He had watched much of Junior Bakeoff, Junior Master Chef, and Master Chef, so he was so fascinated with the idea.
We booked him a cooking session slot at the kids club (one of the reasons why countless families have stayed at that hotel) where cooking sessions are regularily hosted. He was having a solo session with his mom waiting on the sofa there while I was having my culinary lesson elsewhere.
Learning
He worked with a team of kids around his age and led by a hotel chef and kids club helper. The team had to do the ingredient chopping, dough patting and kneading and baking totally on their own with mere supervision and guidance from the chef and helper.
He listens to the chef and awaits instructions
He takes turn for hand washing
The first ever pizza made by him
He is on the way back to the room. He wanted to share his achievement with me. I gave him many thumbs up and patted him on the shoulder!
Why this junior-chef learning makes me smile and happy?
1. Communication
He worked with the chef, the helper, and other kids. He had to listen to and act on instructions. Skipping steps or ignoring instructions could have not complete the session.
2. Collaboration in group
It was not just about him in the group. He had to be considerate and be a team player along the way.
Teams make things happen!
3. Maths
He did the counting of ingredients and sorted out how many of them needed as toppings.
4. Independence
Cooking is a life skill and he got a basic grasp of the A to Z of cooking all on his own.
5. Respect for food and farmers
Farmers work almost around the clock to grow things. Wasting food is disrespect.
6. Respect for all professions
Being a chef or working in the kitchen is not something to be ashamed of. Do just lawyers, bankers or doctors deserve respect?
Sharing
He brought back some slices to the room and shared with me!
In conclusion
What a big milestone and a priceless achievement! My boy has stepped to another stage of his life and started a new chapter of his life! I am proud of him and must thank whoever has guided, led and taught him! Thank you!

I think the world would stop without all professions! Its nice to have doctors but who's building their houses again? ;)
Exactly! But quite ironic that most parents around me been pushing their kids to the limit....Most kids been cramming for exams without life skills and respect for people in other trades.
it's not a bad thing to point your child in the good direction, but in my opinion you shouldn't force them! Let me tell you something, I didn't finish Highschool, but guess who's more successful than anyone else from that school ;) they have their degree? beautiful... but barely can't afford the rent haha
We're on the same channel. I believe in the technical side of all things. Degrees may have been deflated, particularly those non-technical ones. I don't mind if my boy one day would say to me he'd go to a technical institution or a technical-minded university.
