Bamboo scaffolding in Hong Kong construction

in #cn6 years ago (edited)

Background

I came across a post on steel scaffolding about a week before. Steel scaffolding seems to have been dominating in overseas construction industries. Much contrary to what has been happening overseas, bamboo scaffolding has been the mainstay in Hong Kong construction.

A vivid moment is coming to my mind now when it comes to bamboo scaffolding, the other day I was waiting to cross the road and a construction site was in front of me where a wall refurbishment work was going on. A small group of tourists, waiting alongside me, marvelled at bamboo scaffolding when they were turning their eyeballs up and staring at the scaffolding. It might have been their first time having seen that hefty bamboo sticks crisscrossing each other creating that massive scaffolding structure.

Debates on whether steel outperforms bamboo or the other way round seem to have been ongoing among researchers specalised in mechanical properties. Ogunbiyi and the research team (2015) concluded that steel had better stiffness than bamboo. Adewuyi and the research team (2015) reached a similar conclusion. In sharp contrast, Mir (2013) disagreed and countered that 1 inch bamboo is able to withstand almost 7 tonnes of materials. Ghavami (2005) was in favour of bamboo as an inexpensive alternative to steel in construction projects.

Ghavami(2005)贊成將竹子作為建築項目的廉價替代品。

Totally incompetent in mechanical properties, I am not doing an experiment here, let alone debating. Rather, I would like to present to you how skilled those professionals in the construction trade are at carefully weaving bamboo poles one after one, vertically and horizontally, to form platforms and frames on the construction site.

Bamboo scaffolding from a layman's perspective

This is the bamboo construction structure the tourists standing next to me went in awe of. The scaffolding is visually captivating. The building is wrapped by the makeshift bamboo frame on which construction professionals go up and down to overhaul and revitalise the building.

An overhead horizontal platform is right above the pavement, on which construction professionals work their way up the vertical frame like spidermen.

The horizontal platform in the last photo is accompanied by three slanted platforms around the building. The slanted platforms can prevent people, tools, or things from falling to the ground.

Is crisscrossing of these bamboo sticks some breathtaking art?

Look at how jaw dropping it can be. This photo, adopted from Arterially (2016), shows The Convention Centre in Wanchai, is wrapped by an large enclosure of bamboo sticks. Construction professionals construct an enclosure like this from the ground merely with their bare hands!

I couldn't take any photos of construction professionals working up there. Here, a photo from CNN (2016) can explicitly show you how they work like spidermen.

What a great post!

As a matter of fact, the material steel is the strongest material to be used in construction sites as steel has a much higher tensile strength and compressive strength. But bamboos are a great alternative as they are very inexpensive and are very compact fibrous materials. In terms of bending strength, Steel still takes home the grand prize.

The steel will definitely outperform bamboo in strength but in terms of cost efficiency I think bamboo has a very fair fight. Would you risk your life to climb one pole of steel or one pole bamboo pole? That's almost out of the question.

but if one steel is the cost of 100 bamboos, Which one would you allow your life to depend on?

I've always been fascinated with the bamboo scaffolding in Hong Kong and thanks for showing the world how efficient and beautiful it can be :)

What you said makes ample sense! When bamboo sticks can perhaps do 60% of the job steel sticks can do in stiffness and durability terms but are a whole lot cheaper. It makes $ sense to go for bamboo. Adding bamboo sticks to excess to make a platform or frame mechanically stronger probably may be still cheaper than using a minimum amount of steel for the same purpose. Just my wild guess :-)

That's a lot of bamboo! I love that they use a renewable resource instead of steel!

Yes, bamboo sticks can be reused countless times on different construction sites until fragile.

What an amazing plant - bamboo! I did not know what it is used for construction scaffolding
