Have you heard about Quantity Surveying ?

A Quantity Surveyor (QS) is a construction industry professional with expert knowledge on construction costs and contracts. They are not to be confused with Land Surveyors or Land Survey Engineers.

Indeed, I would say a professional quantity surveyor is a combination of an accountant and a lawyer in the construction industry, they should have good understanding on construction cost and contract clauses., as well as construction technolgy. If you want to know whether someone is a professional quantity surveyor, you can simply ask him how much is the cost of a building, a mall, etc.

The public always question that why does the mega-size project costs that much, indeed construction cost can always be divided into three aspects. I am not going to analysis how to accurately estimate on building cost as it might be too dull to all of you!lol. But the following principle should inspire you as it is the basis, it can also be applied on fitting out works which might be more related to you.

Basically, you can always estimate a construction works by dividing the cost into labour, plant and material, as well as overheads and mark-up. Thereby, a quantity surveyor should be familiar with the material cost like concrete, rebar, sand, etc, different kind of skilled labour cost and plant cost like excavator, crane lorry, compactor, roller, etc.

This is only the basic principle in estimating construction cost, of course it may vary by many different factors, for instance, minimum charge, unexpected obstacles (like encountering underground utilities resulting high construction cost, this always happen in majority of the civil engineering projects), etc. Furthermore, the construction cost might keep going up and down, as the material cost, labour cost varies all the time due to many reasons, for instance, government policy, demand & supply.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions regarding quantity surveying. Next, if you find it interesting, I might also briefly discuss different tendering system for your information :)

I hope you enjoy my sharing :)

Thank you very much for your sharing! You really give a very good introduction on the QS industry. Once when I was a Form 7 student, I have put Surveying into one of my choice for my degree. But it just sad that i have too bad score and cannot enter it. So, you really get my respect! And you just enter one of the most good earning industry in Hong Kong. Great job.

Good post. Keep going to do it.

In Asian countries where labor is cheap, these kind of jobs won't pay much, that is why many people try to settle in western world, where wages are good and they can live a better life @pakyeechan

Indeed the labour cost is getting higher and higher even in Asian, one of the reason is that when the country runs too many mega size civil projects at the same period, shortage of labour bring up the price. The other reason is that teenagers may find construction works less attractive, they presumed it is unsafe, dirty or even low-class, resulting average age of construction workers above 40 or even 50, hence, shortage of labour.

Okay no problem.

Wow cool, didn't know thats your occupation!! It is so professional!! But still i think many of the constructions in Hong Kong are redundant, i am not saying expensive and not worth, i am saying its is not of that urgent need. There are other priorities to be settled before those bridges or runways are needed. Furthermore the over budget thing is absurd, as a professional, skilled in your arts, for estimating a project, how can you not consider those as a factor? That is like a doctor operating on someone without thorough assessment and prediction of worse case scenario!! Anyway big thank you for you information!!

rock sister, i want to know.. please tell me more ( ._.)

Let me translate the question from @linuslee0216 for other readers –
Why construction projects always delay?

My answer -
There are many different reasons may lead a construction project delays, for instance, inclement weather is the most common example, as many construction works cannot be done in heavy rainfall, like concreting. Other than that, unpredictable underground conditions always lead delay to a project, hence construction cost increased. This is commonly found in civil engineering works, as ground investigation technology cannot fully discover underground conditions so far, trial pit will be conducted for further investigation, underground utilities or obstacles may need to change of design and abortive works, hence, the project might delay.

Interesting ! Thanks for sharing this :)

I think estimating construction cost is tiresome work requiring accuracy.

I'm also a QS in Asia and QS practice is not that well known around here in Korea.

oh so you working in Korea??? nice to meet you QS buddy!

Im working in Seoul. Where are you? Nice to meet you too. Lol.
